Maya's POV
I was walking by Dad's room when I heard a phone ring. My phone.
I looked down the hall and saw that no one was there. I quickly went into his room and found my phone sitting on his Xbox.
Seriously? He couldn't find a better place to put it?
I slowly picked it up and saw it was an unknown number.
"Hello?"
"Maya, it's me. Thomas's dad. He's awake."
"Really? That's great!" I exclaimed.
"But he's not doing well. He wants you here," Mr. Collins said.
"Okay. I'll be here there as soon as I can," I said and hung up.
"What the hell are you doing?" A loud voice groaned.
I jumped and dropped my phone. Dad stood in the doorway with a hard look on his face. He was fuming.
"I'm sorry. I heard it ringing and I had to check," I said quickly as I picked it up off the floor.
"Well, I hope you enjoyed using it because you're not getting it back for a while," he said and snatched it from me. He pointed to the door. "Go."
"Dad-"
"Do I need to repeat myself?" He yelled.
"It's Thomas!"
"What?"
"His dad called and said he's not doing good. I need to go to the hospital. Ground me as long as you want, but let me see him," I pleaded.
"I wouldn't say no to that, Maya. Get in the car," he sighed.
I ran to the car and hopped in the passenger's seat. Thomas could be on his deathbed. I needed to see him at least one more time.
*~*
I ran out of the car and into the hospital, my eyes scanning the room in a panic.
Thomas was in there somewhere. I needed to get to him.
The front desk gave me his floor and room number. The elevator was taking too long, so I dash up the stairs.
"Slow down," Dad said behind me, out of breath.
"I can't. This is Thomas we're talking about," I said and ran faster.
I opened the door to his floor and ran to his room. Mr. Collins stood outside the door with Thomas's sister in his arms and his hand on her brother's shoulder. His eyes met mine.
"It's too late," he said.
I tried to push through the doctors coming in and out of his room, standing on my tiptoes trying to see him. I saw the flatline on the monitor, instead, crumpled to the floor. Everything was a blur.
Memories filled my head. The kidnapping, Nick being shot, and his dying. I lost Thomas like I lost Nick. This was my fault. I couldn't blame Jacob. I could only blame myself.
And then, I heard it. The beeping of a heart monitor meant there was a heartbeat.
Thomas's POV
I left my roomand went downstairs. Nick was in the living room playing video games.
"Nick? What are you doing here?" I asked.
"It's more like what are you doing here?" Nick said.
"What are you talking about? This is my house."
