Thomas's POV
I had just gotten home from school when I checked the voicemail. My phone nearly slipped from my grasp, and I dashed out the door. I ran to the hospital, not waiting to find a ride.
A layer of sweat formed above my lip by the time I reached the large beacon of illness. I wiped it with my sleeve and looked for someone familiar in the waiting room. I saw Calum with two women that looked like him. Probably his mum and sister.
"Calum!" I yelled and made my way over to him. "Where's Maya? I want to see her."
"We can't go in her room right now. They said she was in a coma," he said.
"No! I need to see her. I-I-"
He put his hands on my shoulders. I forced my panicked eyes to meet his.
"We have to wait, Thomas. I'm sorry," he said.
I let my shoulders sag, and he let go. I plopped down into one of the chairs. My arms hung loose by my sides.
"I can't lose Maya," I said.
"We won't. At least, I hope so."
Maya needed to live. Ever since she relapsed, all I could think of was my promise to Nick. The memory of that day played through my head.
Nick and I were at my house playing video games. It was how we spent our time while waiting for Maya to come back from the tour.
After a few rounds, I gave up on the game. We went to the kitchen to get snacks.
"Hey, Thomas? Can I ask you something?" Nick asked.
"Uh, sure," I said, sliding him a can of soda.
"If anything ever happens to me, can you promise that you'll be there for Maya? You'll protect her for me?" He asked.
I was a little shocked by his question. Nick had never said anything like that about anyone, including his family. He cared more for his friends, but I didn't think his feelings went that deep.
"Yeah. I promise," I said.
"Are you being serious or are you just saying that?"
"Of course, I'm being serious. You guys are my best friends. I can tell how much she means to you and I don't need your ghost haunting me."
We laughed and went back to playing video games, but from that moment on, I knew that he loved Maya. Nick wanted nothing more than for her to be safe.
"You're her boyfriend, aren't you?" Calum's sister asked.
"Yeah, I am," I told her. "You're Mali-koa?"
"Mali."
She smiled sympathetically and moved closer, putting a hand on my shoulder. She had the same welcoming attitude that Calum had. It made me feel a bit more comfortable.
"I think you and Calum are in the same spot. You're both lost."
"I don't think so. Calum seems sure of how he feels."
"He can act angry, but I know my brother. He's beside himself right now," she said.
Mali looked to the left where Calum stood. He and Luke were having a serious conversation. We made eye contact for a moment. I nodded at him and stared down at the floor.
"You said we're both lost. How?" I asked.
"Calum tells me about you and Maya. You two are more alike than you realize. Anyway, you're lost because you don't know what to do. Your girlfriend is in the hospital and there's nothing you can do but wait for her to get better."
