This is post-kidnapping when Maya was sixteen.

I lay down on the floor of the basement in the dark. The door creaked open, and footsteps thundered down the stairs. I hid myself in a corner, and the light flickered on.

"Maya!"

"Nicky!" I said and jumped up, wrapping my arms around him.

"Yeah, it's me. We've got to get you out of here," he said.

"Not so fast."

Nick turned around to see my kidnapper at the bottom of the stairs. He stared us down menacingly and pulled a gun out of his back pocket.

"Dave," Nick spat.

"Step away from the girl," Dave said, pointing the gun at Nick.

"Nicky, please. Go," I begged.

"No. I came here to protect you," Nick said.

"Your mistake," Dave sneered and pulled the trigger.

I screamed as Nick fell to the floor. I sat down next to him and cupped his face with my hands. The bullet went through his head, killing him instantly.

"No! You can't die! Wake up!" I yelled.

"It's too late," Dave said.

I slowly got up and turned to look at him, but he wasn't there. I felt an object drop into my hands. I looked down to find the gun, my finger on the trigger.

I did it. I killed Nick.

I sat up in bed so fast it felt like I had whiplash. My heart pounded against my chest as the sound of heavy breathing filled the room.

This was the third time I'd had a nightmare this week, and it scared me more every time. It was the same dream every night. Nick was trying to save me and he was shot. I was the one who shot him. The gun was in my hands. It was my fault.

I slipped out of bed, and the floor creaked. I froze out of fear and took another slow step. There was another creak, and I dashed out of the room to Dad's.

I pushed his door open and turned on the light. The darkness was scaring me. Someone could be hiding somewhere, waiting to strike.

"Dad?"

"Yeah, sweetheart?" He said and rubbed his eyes while sitting up.

"Can I sleep in here tonight?" I asked.

"Yeah. Come here."

I ran to the bed and hid under the covers. He pulled me closer to him, and I rested my head on his chest.

"Another nightmare?" He asked.

"Yeah," I whispered.

"Was it the same one again?"

"Yeah."

"I'm sorry, Maya."

"It's scaring me, Dad. I don't know what to do," I said, and a few tears rolled down my cheeks.

"I know, baby girl. I'm so sorry. I should've been watching you that night. You wouldn't have been kidnapped if I was," he said.

"It's not your fault."

"I want to help you so bad but I don't know how. I think it would be best if we just give it some time. It'll go away."

"What if it doesn't? I'm scared of going to sleep at night because I don't know if I'll have that dream or not. I don't even want to close my eyes," I cried, clenching his shirt in my fists.

"It'll go away. I promise. I won't let that happen to you again. I'll keep you safe," Dad said.

"Please," I mumbled.

"I promise. No one else is getting hurt on my watch."
