Maya's POV
I woke up and looked at my surroundings. A thin white blanket covered the bottom half of my body, and the room smelled like chemicals. It looked like I was in a hospital.
Why was he here?
I should've been at the orphanage. It was adoption day. May would freak out if I was late.
Where was May? Was she here, too?
I turned my head to the side to see six people looking at me. There were four older guys, a teenage boy, and a girl. There was a curly-haired one, a blondish brown-haired one with blue eyes and a lip ring, and one with black hair and tan skin.
The last one had red hair and green eyes. He stood closer to me than the others. He had an eyebrow piercing and tattoos on his arm. He smiled when I looked at him.
Who were these people?
The one with red hair walked up to the bed and hugged me. My arms hung loose by my side. I could feel his calloused hands through the thin material of the hospital gown.
"You're awake! Oh, my god. You scared me. I thought I lost you," he said.
"That's nice, but-" I paused for a second. "Who are you?"
He pulled away and frowned. He looked over his shoulder, having a conversation with the people behind him with his eyes. The blonde shrugged his shoulders, and Red Head turned back to me.
What?" He asked.
"Do I know you? You don't look familiar," I said.
Everyone turned to the doctor for an explanation. I didn't even know she was in here. I squinted to see her name tag. Doctor Stevens, I thought it said.
What the hell was going on?
"I'm so sorry. When Maya hit her head, there was some damage to the part of her brain that controls her long-term memory. We're not sure about the extent of her memory loss, but, probably, she doesn't remember you," Dr. Stevens said.
That might have cleared Red Head's confusion, but it didn't for me. I was beyond confused. I didn't know who any of these people were or where I was. I could've been in a hospital in Alaska for all I knew.
"No. It must be a mistake. Maybe she just needs some time, yeah? Her brain just hasn't caught up with what's happened yet," Blondie said.
"I'm sorry. We've run many tests and we need to do some verbally, but with the results we have, your daughter probably has retrograde amnesia. She doesn't remember anything from the past three years," Dr. Stevens said.
Daughter? What did she mean?
I didn't have a family. My parents died when I was ten.
All eyes were on me again. I didn't know what to do so I just stared back. They were an odd bunch but they all had something in common: the six of them knew me, but I didn't know them.
"So, you really donmber us?" Red Head asked.
"Should I?"
I felt bad when his face sank. I could see the light drain from his eyes when he realized that I wasn't lying. I truly had no idea who he was.
"Well, we are your family," he said.
"I don't have a family. My parents died when I was little," I said.
Red Head's expression turned angry. He backed away from me to stand next to Curly Hair, who tried to talk to him. He shook his head and glared at the floor.
