Maya's POV
Leila came over to help me pick out an outfit for the party after school. She was wearing a very short, strapless black dress that hugged her curves along with a pair of heels.
She threw me my high-waisted shorts and a sleeved crop top with a shredded back.
We looked at ourselves in the mirror, admiring her outfit choice for both of us. My dad wouldn't even let me walk around the house in this, let alone go out with friends. I reveled in it.
"Let's go," Leila said.
I grabbed my phone, put on my shoes, and left the room. I was halfway to the front door when Zoe stopped me.
"Where do you think you're going dressed like that?"
"A party," I said.
"No, you are not."
"Here we go," I said to Leila. "Give me a minute."
"Jacob's here. I'll be in the car," she whispered and went outside.
I sighed and turned around to face Zoe. She stood in the middle of the living room with her arms crossed over to her chest, looking at me with warning eyes.
"Go upstairs and change. You will not be going anywhere. You're grounded," Zoe said.
"You can't do that!" I yelled.
"Yes, I can. I'm in charge until Michael gets back. You are not going to that party, especially dressed like that."
"You can't stop me from going. Just because you're dating my dad doesn't mean you can boss me around. You're not my mother!" I ran outside, frantically yelling once I got in the car. "Drive!"
Jacob sped down the street just as Zoe came out the front door. I took a deep breath and leaned back in my seat.
"You okay?" Jacob asked, looking at me through the rearview mirror.
"I need a drink as soon as we get to the party."
*~*
The party just started, and everyone was already drunk. It was basically what you would expect at a high school party. A bunch of teenagers in the backyard with alcohol on their breath, and sweaty bodies cluttered together inside on a makeshift dance floor. Every room was stocked with alcohol.
I grabbed the first thing I saw and chugged it down. I grimaced at the bitter taste and the burning in my throat. I took another one and drank around half.
I could already feel the effects taking over as my eyes swept the room. I stumbled to the doorway to a back room to search for my friends, who had disappeared. Jacob was leaning against the wall with one leg bent. He held a beer bottle by the neck. His eyes closed as he turned his head up to the ceiling.
"Hey, Jacob!" I said as I walked over to him.
"Hey," he replied, and I flung an arm around him. "Are you drinking?"
"No, silly," I said and took another sip from the cup I didn't realize was in my hand.
"You are going to be so hungover," he mumbled and walked away.
I followed him into the main room, and we got caught in the mass of people. I started dancing to the beat. Jacob stood still amid strangers, smirking as he watched me.
I smiled and tried to get him to dance with me. It didn't work, so I slowly walked over to him. His breath hitched when I was less than an inch away. I planted a single kiss on his cheek before proceeding to his jawline and eventually his neck.
"Maya, stop. There are people here," he moaned.
"So? The couple over there is making out," I said against his skin.
I pointed to two people in a corner, almost hidden by everyone around them. I kissed his lips and pushed away when I heard a gasp from behind Jacob. Thomas stood there with a shocked expression on his face. His cup slipped out of his hand and fell to the carpet.
"Maya?"
"Hey, Thomas," I said. I went to hug him, but he pushed me away.
"After all I did, after everything we went through, and you choose him?" Thomas said, pointing at Jacob.
"What do you mean? We were never together," I said.
"But you-"
"She doesn't need you. Get lost," Jacob said.
Thomas looked heartbroken. Angry tears were fresh in his eyes.
"You're making a huge mistake," he said and left.
Thomas's POV
I couldn't believe her. After all, I did for her, and she chose him. I tried to protect her, and Jacob stole her from under my wing.
I smashed the bottle in my hand against the wall. Broken pieces scattered across the floor. I watched as the light of the moon glinted off the glass.
I couldn't lose Maya. Especially to him. She was going to do something that she'd regret and come running back to me.
"I'm coming for you, Morris," I said. "Just wait."
Maya's POV
It was around midnight as Leila, Jacob, and I walked around the city. The sound of our drunken laughter traveled through alleyways and into the sky.
Unknown to us amid our intoxication, Jacob took a rock and threw it at the window of a gas station. He missed. I took one and did the same.
Soon, all of us were throwing rocks against a brick wall. I picked up a heavy rock and threw it. I didn't think for a second that it could be something else—that was until the glass shattered, and an alarm went off.
"Hey!"
I turned to see a man running towards us, an obnoxious hat that screamed authority resting on his head.
"Run!" I yelled.
We made a dash down the street with him hot on our trail. Our footsteps thundered against the pavement as we ran. I stumbled a little due, to my energy dwindling.
Just as we were about to turn the corner, two more cops jumped out. They formed a barricade around us.
"Hands behind your head," one yelled at us, and we did.
"You're all under arrest," his partner said and shoved us into the car.
