Calum's POV
Adrenaline rushed through my veins as I drove home. My heart was racing but in a good way. I rolled down the window, letting the cold wind hit my face.
The house came into view, and I pulled into the driveway. The lights on the first floor turned on. Right when I stepped out of the car, Michael ran outside with everyone trailing behind him.
"What's going on?" I asked.
"It's Maya. They have news. We're taking Leila and Thomas," he said.
I unlocked the car and started driving once everyone was inside, following Luke and Ashton in Luke's car.
I could see Michael moving out of the corner of my eye. He kept tapping his fingers on the window and playing with the buttons on the radio. I drummed my fingers on the steering wheel to distract myself, but it didn't work. It made me more agitated.
"Can you stop that? You're distracting me," I said.
"I'm sorry. I'm just anxious. Can you drive any faster?" He asked.
"I'm already driving over the speed limit, and Thomas and Leila are in the car. The last thing I need is for their parents to sue me for letting something happen to their kids!" I said, raising my voice.
"Yeah, and I'd prefer not to die before Maya wakes up," Thomas said.
"Not helping," Michael growled.
Thomas sank back in his seat and looked out the window. Leila moved closer and put her head on his chest. He found comfort in the gesture. He tickled Leila's neck, causing her to giggle.
At least if Maya didn't make it, they'd be there to make each other happy.
Michael's POV
I was the first one through the doors once we got to the hospital. I ran to Maya's room with Thomas beside me. Nurses and doctors flooded in and out of her room. I caught the attention of one of them and pulled them aside.
"What's going on?" I asked.
"I'm not permitted to answer that. You need to talk to the main doctor," she said and hurried away before I could ask anything else.
I walked into Maya's room and found her oncologist. The room got crowded as the others filed in behind me.
"What's wrong with my daughter?" I asked, automatically thinking the worst.
"She flatlined for a minute, but we got her right back up in no time. The good news is that we have found a way to remove the tumor. It might help her wake up," Mrs. Stevens said.
"But?"
"There is a survival risk. There's a sixty-percent chance it'll work. It's your decision. But we believe that if we don't do this, she will die. Whether it be the tumor or the coma, she will not survive."
I didn't know what to do. The fate of my daughter rested in my hands. I could risk her safety to get rid of something that was killing her from the inside, or let her most likely die within the next five months unless she woke up.
I thought about it for a few minutes before making my decision.
"Do it. Do whatever you can to make sure my daughter lives."
Luke's POV
It'd been an hour since they brought Maya in for the surgery. They started as soon as Michael said yes. We weren't able to see her before she went in. Thomas and Leila went home not too long ago.
Calum was standing off to the side talking to someone on the phone. He seemed mad, and I would've gone over to talk to him, but the way his jaw was clenched told me that was not a good idea.
Ashton was sitting with Sky, who showed up twenty minutes ago. The two of them were talking to each other in hushed tones, unable to let go of each other.
That left me to sit by myself until Michael came back with two cups of coffee. He handed me one and sat down next to me. His legs were shaking, and he rubbed his hands together nervously.
"Michael, relax. She'll be fine," I told him.
"What if she's not? There's a forty percent chance the surgery won't work," he said.
"But there's a sixty percent chance it will."
"I know I dropped out but I'm pretty sure forty isn't that much less than sixty."
"You knew the risk and let them do the surgery. You have to have some faith that Maya will fall in the right percentage, right?"
He was silent after that, leaving my question to hang in the air. He absentmindedly rubbed his finger over one of his bracelets. I unlocked my phone and went on Twitter.

Michael's POV
The next couple of hours were stressful and felt like forever, but it was all worth it when the doctor walked up to us with a smile on her face.
"The surgery was successful. You may go see her. She's showing signs of waking up."
I nearly tripped over my own feet as I stood up and followed her to a different floor. We were quiet as we entered Maya's new room. I looked down at my daughter, almost crying from relief when I saw that she wasn't hooked to a machine that breathed for her.
Luke moved next to me. He smiled down at her, his eyes rimmed with red.
"See? She's fine," he said. "When are you going to learn to listen to me?"
"Shut up, Hemmings," I said and he laughed. "Soon, those hazel green eyes will open, and everything will be okay."
*~*
Maya woke up at ten o'clock the next morning. We all slept in her room—well, most of us slept. I wanted to stay awake just in case.
It was a simple movement that told me she was going to wake up. She started mumbling words under her breath, and her hands moved slowly. I ran to get someone and waited patiently for a few more minutes. I woke everyone up so they wouldn't miss it.
Her eyes fluttered open. She squinted due to the blinding light and turned to look at us. I sat her up slowly and hugged her. A wonderful feeling washed over me as I held her in my arms after what felt like ages.
"You're awake! Oh, my god. You scared me. I thought I lost you," I said.
"That's nice, but...who are you?"
