When dad left, you thought you were in control

You wanted to be the man of the house

You wanted to wear the big boy pants and dominate

But you never stopped to think of all the pain you caused me

You are my brother, why did you abuse me?!

Mom did all she could to support us

Everyday we did our best to get by

She is not the strongest person

But she dearly loves us

But you are her son, why did you abuse her?

Our sister was always so carefree

Running around the house with her toys Yet every hospital visit made me cry

But she always pulled through like a trouper

But you are her brother, why did you abuse her too?!

The years went by

The abuse continued

Steadily getting worse

All the tears that I cried

Slid silently down my face

I took up that blade

And wanted to end my life

The blade at my neck

All I had to do was slice

Mercy stepped in and saved my life

Courage took my fear

As I took a stand CPS and the Police

Stand in the doorway

I said the truth that put him away

By brother in handcuffs

His eyes full of fear

Now he knows what it's like

To live in that fear

You are my brother, why did you abuse me?

Now my days are brighter

My smile is genuine

The scars are still there

Hidden underneath

Yet I live on

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Many others just like me have been victims of domestic violence. Even so, you can speak out.

You never know what the person next to you is going through

Maybe they have a perfect life

Or maybe they hate their life

Maybe they really need some advice

Or maybe they want to be left all alone

People may not know what you are going through

You keep silent hoping things will get better

Silence is not going to make things better

Silence will only make you more vulnerable

So speak out! I am listening.

Speak and let your voice be heard!

Speak for those who know what you have seen

Speak for those who have no voice

Speak for those who are afraid to say the things on their mind

Make a difference by gaining the courage to help another person

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

If you want to make a difference

Or if you have been through abuse

Help stop the pain

Help save a life

Help those with no voice

Help to end domestic violence
