~~~THE FEAR, THE FEAR OF FALLING APART~~~
"Come on, this way," you motioned to Tadashi. You glanced at the clock on your phone; it was 7:55. "The next trolley comes in five minutes," you explained. Tadashi glanced at you.
"Hey, you know I've got my bike, right?" he asked. You nodded.
"I know. There's just something I want to show you," you answered cryptically. You chatted along for a few minutes and texted Gogo that you would be late to movie night at her place. She complained and jabbed at you a bit for being scared, since tonight was horror movie night. When you explained that you were going with Tadashi, there was an instant change in tone—which meant Honey Lemon had gotten ahold of her phone.
You sighed and put away your phone. "Those two wear me out," you sighed, and Tadashi laughed, smoothly wrapping his arm around you shoulder. It was cold out, so you took the opportunity to stand closer to him. The trolley finally started coming down the road.
"Okay, now I've gotta tell you something important about this trolley," you said, not taking your eyes away from it. Tadashi peered at you, confused. "It's not going to stop."
"What?!" Tadashi exclaimed. You smiled, laughing.
"That's what makes it so fun!" you replied, getting ready to jump. "Just follow me and don't miss."
"Well, obviously," Tadashi said sarcastically.
You lined up with the approaching trolley, calculating the distance and speed you would need to land the jump. Then, you took off, jumping just as you got to the tracks and grabbing onto the poles that lined the open sides for dear life. Your right leg dangled off the trolley, feeling weightless; this was why you liked it so much.
"C'mon, Tadashi! Hurry up!" you called over the din of the trolley. Tadashi looked at you, astounded, before adjusting his messenger bag on his shoulder and sprinting. Just as you thought he wasn't going to make it, he grabbed onto a pole with a loud clang. He found your eyes and grinned so much his face felt numb.
"I-I did it!" Tadashi yelled triumphantly over the noise of the trolley. You laughed and cheered for him, then walked inside to the actual trolley part. Tadashi followed, sitting down next to you on the vacant trolley and sliding his arm nonchalantly around you.
"Did you know these things are machine operated?" you offered. Tadashi glanced down at you; even when he was sitting down, he was taller than you.
"No, I didn't," Tadashi said, smiling a little. You giggled.
"Learn something new every day, huh?" you said. He nodded.
"Yeah. There's just something about learning new information about someone or something you've known for a long time," Tadashi said. "I've lived in this city my whole life, and I never knew that."
"Makes you wonder sometimes, doesn't it?" you said, moving slightly towards him. "About how much you don't know about people." That coming out of your mouth made you nervous. Sometimes you wondered why you didn't tell Tadashi about your prosthetic—it's not like he would dislike you because of it. You just...never could work up the nerve to bring it up.
"Yeah." The two of you rode in comfortable silence until you saw the trolley coming up on the Lucky Cat Café.
"Well, here's our stop," you said. "But be careful, it's a lot harder getting off than it is getting on."
"Yeah?" Tadashi chuckled darkly. "Well go ahead and dial 911 on your phone because this is not going to end well." You laughed. Tadashi hung out the exit of the trolley, then held onto a pole and dragged his shoes on the ground until he had enough friction to stop. That didn't stop you from giggling as he tripped over his own feet, though. Then, it was your turn, and you began to dismount the trolley expertly and gracefully—
--oh no.
As you were stepping off of the trolley, you slipped and fell, losing your grip on the pole. You screamed as you hit the road, legs rolling in front of the oncoming wheels of the trolley. You couldn't move or think; you were petrified, and you could hear Tadashi yelling in the background. You heard the crunch as the wheel of the trolley hit your right leg, but Tadashi was able to pull you out of the way before it could hit your other leg. Your real one.
Breathing heavily, you sat on the sidewalk with Tadashi, trying to wrap your head around what just happened. You got onto one knee, and pushed yourself up—only to fall back down again as you tried to put your weight back on your prosthetic. The ankle part had broken, and now it was unstable. You couldn't walk. Tadashi eyed your right leg warily.
"(Y/N), I need to ask you something," Tadashi asked. You gulped. "If your right leg was just crushed by a trolley...why didn't you get hurt?"
Bonus:
Gogo and Honey Lemon sat on Honey's couch, watching some horror movie Honey had picked out—The Ring. Funnily enough, Gogo was the one scared shitless, eyes hidden in Honey Lemon's shoulder. Honey Lemon just ate her popcorn like it was a delightful family film.
Gogo looked up to see Honey's eyes, focused on the TV. Gogo groaned and stuffed her face back to where she didn't have to look at the horrors on the screen.
"God, Honey, who are you, Satan?!"
Haha I like that bonus :3 So this chapter was more of a development chapter, and I'd like to get some feedback if you don't mind. Am I writing the reader's handicap right? I'm trying to be accurate, so if anyone thinks I should change something about her attitude towards her prosthetic, please message me or just comment! :3
This story is still entered in that x Reader Awards thing, so if you like this book and would like to vote for it, please check Chapter 9's end-of-chapter notes for more info!
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed reading the chapter as much as I enjoyed writing it. See you next time!
