Nick - POV:

It was almost the end of March and Andrea's birthday was in a few weeks and I wanted to do something very special for her. She was almost twentythree and I needed a big surprise, something that would knock her socks off. I thought about getting her clothes, shoes, jewelry, sunglasses, food, money, perfume or anything else girls would like but I couldn't think of the right gift.

So I talked to the only person that would know Andrea better than me. Christie.

I told Christie to meet me at B Cup Cafe and I got there a little early and waited for her at a small table in the back. About ten minutes later the Cafe door opened and Christie walked in, her hair was so big it bounced every time she took a step and the shoes she was wearing were clicking ridiculously.

She slipped in the chair in front of me and pulled off her shades.

"Okay what's up?"

I fidgeted with my coffee mug and sighed. "I have no idea what to do for Andrea's birthday."

She laughed. "That's why you had me meet you?"

I nodded a little embarrassed. "Yes. I just want her first birthday with me to be special."

She flipped her hair and tapped her long red nails on the table. "Hmmmm...you're rich. Buy her a new house."

I rolled my eyes. "Give me another idea."

Christie looked around, pondering. I waited a few seconds until her eyes widened and she hit my arm.

"I know! I know!"

I nodded encouraging her to finish and she grinned. "Let's throw her a surprise party!"

"A surprise party? Isn't that a little over played?"

She shook her head ferociously. "No! It's not! We can buy her a pretty decorated cake! And the party can be huge!"

I shrugged. "That seems cool."

"It can be at your place! And we can invite tons of people and have tons of food and decorations."

I smiled. "Alright, but how are we going to plan this and keep it secret from Andrea?"

"We just have to be sneaky about it."

Christie and I had been planning for a while and so far we'd thought about a chocolate fountain, and all the food we were catering. Andrea's cake would be shaped like a giant blow dryer along with a pair of scissors. Because, you know...she's a hair stylist? Ha. Anyway, later that week my father called me and told me to visit his office, so I did.

I had only been to his office twice in my whole life and being here again, knowing what his business actually did, made me sick. I took a taxi to CBC and literally groaned in agony as I walked through the doors. The place smelled like coffee and paper. I felt like I would vomit any minute.

I was greeted by Jena who was sitting at her desk on the computer.

"Hello Nick! You look very handsome. I haven't seen you in so long."

I had to refrain myself from rolling my eyes or gagging. Yes, Jena was nice but she wasn't innocent. She was in her early thirties and she always found time to hit on me, which I found awkward and creepy. She wasn't an unappealing women, she was fit, blonde with blue eyes, and she had a decent face but something about her screamed trashy. Plus, she worked for my dad and I probably couldn't count the number of times they fucked when my mom was still alive. Ugh.

I gave her a fake smile and rubbed the back of neck. "I know. It's been forever. Umm...my dad sent me here. He wanted to see me."

She leaned closer to me, exposing her breasts that were probably supported by her bra, and grinned. "Of course. Let me give him a call."

I waited as she typed in a few numbers on her desk phone and spoke to my father.

"William?...yes....he's here. Nick. Send him in? Okay....bye."

She set the phone back down on the hook and pressed a red button by her computer. A door behind her buzzed and clicked open and I smiled.

"Thanks."

She batted her eyes at me and smiled. "No problem. Go ahead in."

I went in and my mood immediately dropped even lower which I didn't think was possible. The room was dull and gray and the vibe I was getting made me want to run away and get some sunshine. I saw my dad sitting in the far back at a huge desk typing away on his computer. I walked up to him and plopped down in a chair in front of the desk.

"What do you want?"

He didn't even look up at me. He slid me a orange envelope and I took it off his desk.

"What's this?"

He still didn't meet my eyes, he just kept typing.

"Open it."

I began to rip it open and inside was a check signed from him to me. I read the amount.

$500,000.

My eyes widened and I stared at the amount over and over again.

"What's this for?"

My dad finally looked at me and smiled.

"Think of it as an early pay check."

I shook my head and handed him the check back. "I'm not taking this."

He frowned. "Yes you will. You start work in two months, so you need to get used to pay checks like this."

I sighed and thought about the amount. I didn't even want to know how he got this money. He handed me the check back and leaned back in his chair.

"Take it and shut up. Now leave my office."

I got up, gripping the check in my hands and left his office.

Andrea's surprise party was coming together and I was actually really excited for her to see it. The day of her birthday I was going to pretend I didn't remember and then around eight o'clock I would take her back to my place for the party.

A few days before her birthday Christie came over and we put together last minute details.

"Okay we need all the desserts on this table. And the finger foods on this table."

I nodded and followed Christie to the deck.

"Her cake will be out here if the weather isn't too cold."

I nodded and Christie went through my house making sure we had everything else. We hung up all the banners beforehand so we wouldn't have to worry about them later.

"We have to make sure everyone parks behind your house so it won't look suspicious."

I pulled out my phone. "I'll send a massive text out to everyone so they get the memo."

Christie put her hands on her hips and looked around. "Okay. Good. I think this party will be awesome."

She gave me a high five and grabbed her things to leave. "Good work!"

I laughed. "You too."

I walked her out to her car and then I started sending out the massive text.
