"The first step is the hardest, and that's to get Nick to admit he has a problem," said Dr. Clemons.
"I hate to do this to him." I said with a sigh.
Dr. Clemons told me it would be fine and that I was doing the right thing. All we had to do was confront Nick, get him to admit his addiction, and then the hospital could take him into custody. Today was the hardest step and that was the confrontation. Right now Dr. Clemons, his crew and I were headed over to Nick's; for what Nick thought was lunch between me and him.
When we arrived at his place Nick let me in and we both sat down at the dining table, while being served by a new cook.
I looked at Nick with confusion and took a sip of my water. "Where's Maria?"
He shrugged and leaned back in his chair. "She quit."
I sighed and picked at my salad. I wasn't really hungry. "Nick I have some people waiting outside who want to talk to you."
His whole body stiffened and he glared at me. "Why?"
"Just to talk about your health, they want to help you."
He groaned and slammed his fists on the table. "Really baby? Really!? You want to send me away!? Do you?"
I stood up and made my way over to him. "No, no. I don't want to send you away, I just don't want to see you get worse."
I placed my hands on his shoulders but he pushed them away. "Liar."
He got up and made his way into the kitchen. "I'm not leaving. I don't have a problem!"
I followed him, making sure to word my words properly. "You don't have to leave. Just talk. Please?"
His anger seemed to simmer because his shoulders fell and he rested against the counter. "Fine. Let them in."
I smiled and grabbed his hands. "We will get through this I promise."
He rolled his eyes while I sent out a text to Dr. Clemons telling him everything was ready. When Dr. Clemons and his crew walked in I squeezed Nick's hand and gestured to them.
"Nick this is Dr. Clemons and he's here to talk."
Dr. Clemons gave him a friendly smile and shook his hand. "Nice to meet you Nick."
Nick didn't respond and I cleared my throat to break the awkward silence. "Nick why don't you and Dr. Clemons go somewhere to talk?"
Without speaking Nick began walking to his study and Dr. Clemons followed.
* * * *
Two hours had passed and Dr. Clemons and Nick were still talking. I was pacing in the kitchen wondering what must be going on and why Nick was being so obedient. Maybe he was tired of fighting and wanted help but didn't know how to ask for it? Maybe he didn't care anymore? Maybe he was just tricking me and wasn't going to go to rehab, who knows?
The rest of the employees from the rehabilitation center were trying to calm me down but I was too tense. Another thirty minutes passed and then I finally heard them descending from the steps. I rushed towards the stairs and smiled at them both.
"How did it go?"
Dr. Clemons patted Nick's shoulder, and frowned. "Nick has decided to go to the center with us for a few months."
I smiled and reached out for Nick but he rejected me. "Nick I'm so happy you aren't making this bigger than what it is."
Nick didn't answer, he just glared at me. Dr. Clemons saw the tension between us and squeezed my shoulder and gestured for his crew to come.
