I bent over and slowly picked up the extra bags of ice that were needed for the coolers. As I made my way back up the basement stairs I was greeted by wide eyes and a incredulous expression.
"Andrea what are you doing carrying big bags of ice!?"
I rolled my eyes as Nick carefully took the bags from me and I hit him on the shoulder. "I didn't need your help! I was fine!"
He smirked and glanced down at my belly. "Honey, you're with child. I don't want the baby crushed by ice."
My tone quickly shifted from annoyed to sarcastic and I kissed his cheek. "You're so thoughtful."
He rolled his eyes at me and carried the ice outside to the backyard. I pulled my maxi dress back down over my pregnant belly of 5 months and made my way outside.
"Mommy! Mommy! Christie is here!"
I smiled down at Cameron. He was my everything. At only five years old he had already began pulling in his fathers looks. His light caramel skin perfectly completed his hazel-green eyes and his full head of brown curly hair made all the older women grab and coo at him all the time. I couldn't wait for the new addition of the family so he could have company and a sibling.
"Thanks for letting me know Cameron. You should go help your daddy with the grill."
Cameron nodded and sprinted over to where Nick and all the men were chatting. As soon as I turned around I spotted my best friend Christie and her husband Aaron. Christie saw me and embraced me immediately.
"Oh Andrea, you're glowing! How's the baby?" She said, rubbing my belly.
I smiled at her and pretended to wipe fake sweat off my forehead. "She's very heavy, but I can't wait to see her."
Christie's eyes widened and she grinned like a Cheshire Cat. "It's a girl!?"
I nodded. "The doctor told us a few days ago."
She pulled me into another hug and sighed. "Congratulations."
I smiled and gestured to Aaron. "So, tell me. How was the honeymoon?"
Christie blushed and leaned against Aaron. "It was wonderful."
Aaron gave her a peck on the lips and chuckled. "We extended it an extra week because Christie didn't want to leave."
I chuckled. "That sounds like something she would do."
Eventually Aaron merged over to where the rest of the guys were and Christie and I took a seat at one of the picnic tables. "So, is Nick doing better? You know...with the drugs?"
I nodded firmly. "He had a little relapse right after he left the center, but once I threatened to leave him he became serious."
She smiled. "And that's when he proposed?"
I glanced down at the huge diamond ring on my left hand and grinned. "Yeah, and then Cameron came. He hasn't touched that crap in years."
"The businesses are going good I'm guessing?"
I nodded. After the whole incident with Nick's father Nick was unemployed for a while. But, he went back to school and got his masters in business. Since then he opened a business that provided money to rehabilitation centers and helped out people with drug addictions. He also started a company that encourages and keeps kids motivated that have dealt with parental suicides or absences. I was so proud of him and I showed him everyday that I was glad he carried on and didn't let his past affect him.
I, myself, even did bigger and better things. I opened three more hair salons, one in Los Angeles, another in Atlanta, and in Miami. All of which were under my name and were being managed in every location. Every now and then I would fly and visit the shops, just to make sure everything was in order. Also, my conditioner landed big with L'Oréal and now their company sells it in local stores. I won't complain because the profit I'm making is amazing.
