CHAPTER TWELVE

The air outside was cold and nippy as Lexi stepped out of Morgan Term after her first full day at school.  She tightened her cashmere coat around her and quickly made her way towards the parking lot, ready to drive to the clinic and see her baby for the first time.

It took her a half hour to reach the clinic after driving around in circles, in hopes of finding the correct street.  She parked just beside Angel's Lexus and stepped out, leaving her tote bag inside.

"How'd it go, sis?!" Angel chirped excitedly, clasping her gloved hands together.

"It went really well," Lexi grinned.  "I met these two girls that showed me around and I'm already in love with the classes.  We have to read books which I'm so interested in!"

"I'm so happy for you," Angel smiled, leaning in to hug Lexi, who hugged back tightly.  "Ready to see baby?"

Lexi nodded, frantically and Angel snickered and led her towards two sliding glass doors that belonged to a large steel and glass one-floored building.

They reached a heated lobby where a sandstone desk was centred with chairs and rooms surrounding it.

"Hi.  I have an appointment with Dr.  Pinchfield for four PM please," Angel said.

The male receptionist clicked away at his computer and looked up with his nerdy glasses.

"It's the second room on my right.  Take a seat, please," he replied in a lisp.

Angel inclined her head and the two of them set towards two free white leather chairs just beside a wooden door that contained a plaque with the name; Dr.  Lisa Pinchfield, OBGYN on it.  They sat down and Angel grabbed a beauty magazine from a coffee table in front of them.

"You know you won't be able to determine the sex of your baby, right?" She asked.

Lexi nodded her head.  "Yeah, I know it's still far too early to know."

"It'll be nice to hear the heartbeat, though," Angel said.  "You'll love it!"

Lexi nodded in agreement and the two of them sat on in silence, waiting.

Dr.  Pinchfield's door was wrenched open after about ten minutes and a very pregnant lady emerged, with her hands entwined round her husband's and their son.  Lexi scowled and her stomach clenched, nervously.  She was grateful to have Angel with her for this appointment but it somehow felt wrong in a way, to be having one of these appointments at her age.

Dr.  Pinchfield stepped out of her office.  She was a middle-aged woman with coffee coloured skin, a mane of dark curly hair and a very plump stomach that was covered by her white lab coat.

"Ms.  Whitmore and Mrs.  Adams?" She read from a clipboard.

The two of them stood up and Angel raised her hand and Dr.  Pinchfield beamed.

"Angel!" She cried.  "You're pregnant again?"

Lexi's heart skipped a beat and she felt her cheeks flush.

Angel awkwardly bit her lip and glanced at her sister.  "Um, no.  My sister is," she replied.

Dr.  Pinchfield turned to face Lexi and her her facial expression turned stone serious.  She nodded her head, understandingly without saying anything and ushered them into her office which consisted of a desk and computer, with two chairs in front and a chair behind, and a doctor's bed at the back of the room, with medical equipment and an ultra-sound machine.

"Please, sit down," Dr.  Pinchfield said, invitingly as she took a seat behind her desk.

The three of them settled down and Lexi scrutinized the walls which were plastered in posters of babies, menstrual cycles and cross sections of a female womb with a baby inside.
