I still couldn't believe that the mastermind behind Chrysalis' attack was Yuri's father. I also learned that Yuri's middle name is Eve. I guess you learn something new everyday.
"It appears that the culprit behind this case has been found. If nobody has any objections, I believe it is time for me to pronounce my verdict," the judge announced. "I must say that this case has taken more twists and turns then one would expect with the murder, erm, attempted murder of a defense attorney."
I was glad it was merely attempted murder, truthfully. I don't know what I would do if it hadn't been and was a legitimate death. Regardless, I was ready for the judge to announce that Lily was not guilty so this case could finally be put to rest. I had heard that it was being addressed as 'PX-6'. I hoped desperately that I would never have to open this case's files ever again. The real thing had been enough.
"Who is the culprit, anyways? I don't believe I was ever informed," Detective Chief Rinko frowned. If only he knew... Knew that he had a fear for Yuri's safety so strong it formed what was called 'midnight discord.' Knew that the victim fell into her state at his hands due to said midnight discord. Knew that his actions nearly got people killed or sent to prison. Knew that his life had been changed by one little concern taking a physical form in his mind.
"I'm sure it will be explained to you soon enough by the defense team," Polly told him. "Just announce the verdict already."
"Very well. This court finds the defendant, Lily Shield, not guilty. Court is adjourned!" The judge slammed the gavel down, finally bringing PX-6 to a close, never to be opened again.
//December 12, 2029. Defendant Lobby No. 1, 1:08 PM//
"We did it!" Lily exclaimed once court was adjourned and we all had arrived in the defendant lobby. "We got a not guilty verdict!"
Niamh, Yuri, Lily, Chrysalis, and I's celebration was cut short when Nevada burst into the room. "It's over!" she announced, running over to Chrysalis with a grin the size of Earth itself. "It's finally over!"
I couldn't help but agree with her words. It was finally over. I was no longer restless over this case's drastic effects on my mind and this case had been put to rest. I hoped it didn't wake like a zombie and actually stayed dead.
"I'm happy, too," Chrysalis admitted as she was swept up into a hug by Nevada. They smiled at each other for a few moments, just staring into one another's teary eyes, before going into a gentle kiss.
"That's sweet," I commented. Upon hearing my voice, both girls pulled away, their faces the color of cherries.
"Yuri Eve?"
Detective Chief Rinko approached us slowly. "I'm sorry for all I did... The prosecution's assistant explained it all to me..."
"That wasn't your fault at all. Midnight discord is difficult to control and impossible when you don't know of its existence in your mind," Niamh told him.
"And don't worry about my safety," Yuri said. "I'm just happy to be with you again. And there's something I want to say to you before they take you away."
"What is it?" Detective Chief Rinko asked.
"You've inspired me to become a detective myself! I didn't know what to do with my life until today, so thank you!" Yuri ran to his arms and hugged him tightly.
He returned the embrace with a smile. "I know you'll reach my position one day.
"Detective Chief Rinko?" Chrysalis cut in.
"What is it, Ms. Starr?" Detective Chief Rinko questioned.
"You know about me, right?" she asked. "The Oracle of the Law project?"
He replied with a nod. "I've known from the start."
"I'm going to do all I can to get you a not guilty verdict! I know what it's like to have midnight discord, so I'll do everything to get you free from prison!" Chrysalis exclaimed.
"Thank you," Detective Chief Rinko smiled. "Your efforts are very much appreciated. Even if you fail, know that I am very thankful for your even trying, especially after what midnight discord did to us both."
"I won't fail! Promise!" Chrysalis beamed. I found a small grin spreading on my own lips. What would I have done without her everlasting hope for the world?
"Carson..."
I turned to see Ms. Rinko walking into the room, tears filling her eyes. "I didn't think I'd ever see you again," she whispered, a few salty drops falling from her eyes and streaking down her cheeks.
"I'm happy that wasn't true," Detective Chief Rinko confessed.
"Dad?"
Detective and Prosecutor Umber entered next. They were cautious and unsure of what to do. Detective Umber spoke first. "Was it your midnight side we were working with all that time?"
Detective Chief Rinko nodded. "Yes... But now that I know Yuri Eve is safe with her new companions, I don't think we'll have to worry about midnight discord appearing anytime soon."
Prosecutor Umber hesitantly walked towards the Chief of Detectives, seeking a hug. The older man caught on to what his wishes were and embraced his son with a smile. Detective Umber joined in, rubbing her eyes with the back of her hand.
After watching the three hug for a few seconds, Ms. Rinko and Yuri looked at one another for. As if exchanging a telepathic message, they went in for a hug simultaneously. The five of them looked happy together, even with their three missing family members.
I looked at Chrysalis upon feeling her tug on my hoodie sleeve. "You know what I think, big bro?" she asked.
"What?" I questioned in return.
"I bet that Ms. Umber, Venus, and Cassidy are hugging with them from beyond the grave," she replied.
I smiled and slipped her fingers between mine. "You know what?" Chrysalis shot me a curious glance before I answered. "I think so, too."
