Chapter Three
I ended up going home after an hour and a half. I kind of got lost in partying that it all seemed like a regular high school dance and not a party for my birthday. But then they decided to bring out a cake and as soon as that was dished out and they started partying again, I left.
Kyra would understand.
I actually took my time in getting home. It was almost 5pm and there was mostly just adults trying to get home and make super for their families. Teenagers were either home already or still at my secret surprise party.
Outside was pretty quiet. Nothing but the sound of the occasional car passing, and I liked that a lot. Its not very often that it is this quiet on a Friday evening. All it made me want to do is sit in the living room with my mom and sister and watch a cry-worthy movie while drinking hot chocolate. That sounds like the perfect Friday night to me.
Especially after that surprise. It was one surprise that I never wanted until now. I guess I never thought I'd be ready for it but now that it happened, I really did love it. I just need a weekend to recuperate and really think about what happened.
I'm super tired from it all, mostly mentally. Usually I need a weeks advance to mentally prepare for stuff like that. But I didn't have that so I need time after to process it all.
By the time I got to my house, my sister was helping my mom make dinner and they had music blasting.
"Having a party of your own without me?" I yelled over the music and dropped my school bag in the doorway of the kitchen.
"Oh you're back already?" My mom yelled back, she was pretty happy and smiling brightly. I wish that I could see her like this more often. Her eyes sparkled and she looked oh so happy, even on the inside. Not just like she was faking it on the outside. This was her being really truly happy.
I smiled and went over to the bar stool and sat down. Rae was singing along very loudly while using a wooden spoon as the microphone at her own personal concert. My mom was watching her while dancing in pure bliss.
"They brought out cake and then I left," I said a little quieter to my mom.
She nodded her head and let out an 'oh' sound that I could barely here. "Was it chocolate cake?"
I laughed and nodded. This only made my mom laugh even more.
I watched them for a minute until the song was over and then Rae turned down the music and started to tell me about what she did today. All while my mom contented to cook what looked like eggs and bacon. That's a weird thing to have for dinner.
When she was getting close to finished, she sent Rae and I into the living room to choose a movie to watch. We decided on 'The Incredibles' and managed to pop it into the DVD player before mom returned with three plates of food.
I raised my eyebrows at her but she left to get the drinks before I could question what was on my plate.
"Did you really-"
When she returned I tried to question her but she cut me off. "Its breakfast for supper. I want breakfast and I thought it'd be fun."
I laughed lightly and sat beside her on the couch while Rae sat on her other side. Tonight was going to be pretty awesome.
**
Mom and I spent the whole afternoon cooking together while Rae was doing some project at a friends house. We spent more time bugging each other and throwing food and less time actually cooking the meal.
This weekend was turning out to be exactly what I needed.
Rae came home a mess with dirt, glue, and leafs all over here. Neither of us asked as she ran up to the bathroom her and I share to take a shower. We set the table just in time for Rae to come back down stairs with wet hair asking for me to dry it for her.
As we snuck away upstairs to do that, the doorbell rang and my mom hollered at us that it would be fine to take our time. So I did, Rae is pretty particular about her hair. So much that she doesn't trust out mom to do it most of the time. I'm the only one allowed to touch it sometimes because I can do it when she's in a rush. Other than that, she's the only one who can do her own hair.
So it took me not time flat to dry her hair. Mostly because it's super thin like mine and easy to dry. She braided a bit of it back from her face after that and went straight downstairs to meet the new neighbours.
I took a second and washed off some left-over food from my face and jeans then brushed out my hair before joining everyone downstairs. I almost froze in my spot when I saw the ego sitting there. Of course he happens to be new neighbours. I knew he lived on my street now so why didn't I see this coming from a mile away like I should have?
I made my way over to the only empty seat across from him and beside his brother.
He looked at me almost smugly like he knew this was going to happen. "So I guess I was right when I figured it was your house we had moved into across the street from."
I rolled my eyes and my mom looked pretty surprised. "You two have met?"
I gave my mom a fake smile, "oh yes. Simon here is on the football team and Tyrone introduced us on Thursday."
My mom and his mom looked back and forth between us for a second before letting it drop even though I really wish they had asked more questions. Maybe then I could get out of this torturous dinner.
Our mom's got sucked into a conversation about the crazy grocery store that's just down the street from us. Rae and Simon's brother decided to talk about the differences between his old school and his new school. He was only a grade under Rae but he seemed very smart.
Simon on the other hand just ate his food and stared at me like he wanted to say something but didn't know how to bring it up with his family around. Good, I don't want to talk to him.
Dinner felt kind of long, but that might have been because I ate slowly as to avoid the inevitable conversation that Simon and I were going to happen after the meal. I knew it was coming. Things like this always happen. Mostly to me though, not other people. Sometimes it feels as if though I'm on a TV show drama or something.
Next thing you know I'll be turned into a vampire curtsy of Simon.
Don't jinx yourself Eve.
