Chapter Seventeen

Professor Claudette was dismissing students from her room who probably had helped her mark her tests. She was surprised to see us there but agreed to meet us for only a few moments because she had somewhere she needed to be very soon. Tela had told me on the way over here that she is the oldest teacher in this whole school. And she's 'only' three hundred and seven years old. Like that was even possible!

I can believe a lot of things at this school because I can just blame it on magic or whatever, but Professor Claudette told us she was a fairy and she looked like she was in her late twenties, not her three-hundreds. If that was even a real thing.

That or fairies just don't age at all.

"What can I do for you two ladies on a Monday evening?"

We both looked at each other nervously before Tela finally blurted it out.

"We need you to tell us about the Elf War."

Professor Claudette looked more than surprised to be hearing this. "But Tela, you learned all about it a few years ago. And I'm not supposed to teach it to Eve until-"

Tela cut her off, "you are the coolest professor in this school, and also the oldest. But Eve needs to hear it from someone who knows more than me. I... hardly paid attention in class..."

Tela suddenly looked really nervous but Professor Claudette hardly noticed. She only sighed and looked at me, "Why do you want to hear about the Elf War?"

I hesitated for a moment. Who do I trust? "Because... a book told me to learn it."

Professor Claudette then took a seat in one of the many desks her students usually sit in while she teaches. "What kind of book? And where did you find it?"

Tela and I both gave each other a look and Tela sighed, "maybe she will be able to see it."

I was confused for a second but then I understood what she had meant. My tattoo.

I didn't say anything and instead just took my sweater off so she could see the whole thing. When she sucked in a breath, I knew she could see it. But this showing everyone my tattoo thing wasn't sitting well with me. Headmaster Arroyo said this was the one thing I shouldn't do. Should I trust him? Or should I trust Tela? Maybe no one can be trusted.

That's probably why I need to learn about this war. Tela keeps mentioning it in a way that it has something to do with me somehow. I have no idea even how long ago it was. Must be ancient because this is the first I've heard of it.

I looked back up at Professor Claudette and she was staring at my arm. Yea, she definitely can see it.

We were all very quiet. I think Professor Claudette wanted an explanation for my tattoo, but I honestly didn't have one for her. Tela was waiting probably for her to start telling me about the Elf War. I was waiting for anyone to speak before me with some sort of explanation because I still have no clue what is happening.

These last few days have been a roller coaster and just go, go, go. I still haven't had any time to stop and think anything over yet.

"Well," Professor Claudette finally released a breath of air that she was holding in. "You should sit down and pay attention to what I'm about to tell you."

I sat down beside her and Tela sat on the other side. She took another few moments before she started to tell us about the Elf War.

"Five thousand and seven hundred years ago - give or take ten years - the dark elves broke free of their home world." She didn't seem to know where to really start, but she rolled with this very easily. Almost like she had told it one thousand times. "It started with only a few of them at first, just one at a time. But then ten more cane, and then a hundred and soon enough they were all out. Men, women, and children. All free and out of their bounds and ready to reek havoc anywhere and everywhere they could."

"That's exactly what they did. They killed so many people, and they started with the only ones who could really defeat them, the light elves. They wiped out every-last one of the light elves in existence."

"See, the light and dark elves were said to have this connection, this very weird connection, they can feel when the other is near. So they could tell how many light elves there were and got rid of them all." She shook her head with a dark look of sadness, "they were the only ones who could truly defeat the dark elves."

With a deep but shaky breath, she continued on.

"But then their came a new marking on the wizards, they didn't know how to take it at first. Their children not becoming Scorpion Wizards or Eagle Wizards, but rather Dragon Wizards. There was a new species being created and they were the most powerful beings ever seen."

Professor Claudette seemed like she was in a magical dream that she didn't want to wake up from. "There was hope, so many Dragon Wizards were popping up and they learned everything they could, tried to at least, and went to war. War with the dark elves."

"It lasted over one thousand years. The war went through many generations and wiped out almost all of both sides. Dark elves were reduced to a small enough number that other magical beings could lock them up on their distant planet once again, but the Dragon Wizards were wiped out except for a mere ten that were left standing at the end."

"What happened to them?" I asked quietly when she didn't continue.

She shrugged, "no one really knows. Some say they went crazy. Apparently the dark elves were able to steal their dragons, to kill them. Without their dragons, they went insane and killed themselves." She looked at me wearily, "but that's only one rumour that I've heard. Some say they were locked up on a distant planet as well because everyone was too afraid of them. Others say they're relaxing in paradise, or maybe just waiting for another war."

We were all very quiet while we thought it over. So this means something is going to happen right? I'm here for a reason. Maybe the previous Dragon Wizards saw this coming and they left me that note. Maybe they knew why I was here, maybe all the answers are in that library.

I stood up very quickly and startled Tela and Professor Claudette. "I'm here for something big, and that library knows why."

I looked at Tela, "I've got to start reading those books, like now."

Jaden looked startled as Tela and I dropped a bunch of books onto one of the empty beds in our bed room. She said I was allowed to use it for storage, but just for a little bit. Now was that time. "Where'd you get all those books from?"

"The library," Tela mumbled as she pulled some more out of her bag and I started to organize them into better piles.

"Have you got a lot more catching up to do?" Jaden asked while looking over at me from her bed where she was reading a book about flying in space.

I shook my head, "no, I'm not going to wizarding classes anymore."

"What?" She stood up with surprise, "why not?"

I shrugged, "I get to teach myself now. Headmaster Arroyo told me to."

She was still filled with surprise and confusion. "Is there a reason he told you to?"

I nodded, "however, for the time being its top secret."

She slowly nodded her head, "okay, but just be careful."

I smiled at her, "I will."
