Chapter Two

Cheer practice was during last period. We get special permission to miss class last period every friday as long as we go to practice. Football players, lacrosse players, and the swim team all have this special privilege as well as the cheer team. Mostly just the school's favourite sports get this privilege. As well as the band team however they get marked and earn credits as if it was a real class they were taking.

The cheer leaders used to practice in the gym but its much easier to fall on grass rather than the floor so now we have to share the field with the football players unfortunately.

It was very awkward practicing knowing fully well that I was being watched. Not by the usual suspects though. Tyrone, Neil, Hayden, Nathan. No not them, I've grown to ignore them completely. This time I knew I was being watched by Simon. That ego of his is going to have to go way down, and fast. Or we are going to have a problem.

"Tackle!" Was yelled rather close to me as I tried to correct the pyramid in front of me. I turned my head just in time to see a flurry of shoulder pads and black before I was literally swept off of my feet and carried away.

I screamed loudly and heard a chuckle come from Tyrone. I knew it was his chuckle because his laugh is weird and deeper than his voice and just very different from anyone else's laugh. I started to pound on his back hoping he'd let me go to no avail.

After a minute I gave up and tried to see where he was taking me but that also did not work. I was turned the wrong way so all I managed to see was his back, the grass and side walk, and some trees as we passed by them. Soon enough the sidewalk and grass changed to the tile that laid inside the school.

I took that as an opportunity to shout again and maybe someone would hear me and force him to let me down. "LET ME DOWN!" I screeched but instead I heard a laugh come from the ladies at the front desk.

Well they aren't going to help me apparently.

I sighed and tried to see where in the school he was taking me but it was too late because he stopped and put me down. I was facing him so I punched him in the stomach where I know there wasn't any football padding to protect him.

He let out a groan of pain and tried to not show how much it actually hurt him but it made me smile. "Sweetheart, just go into the gym." He said then took a deep breath to try and speed up his recovery.

I rolled my eyes then turned to the gym doors just for his amusement. There was black construction paper blocking out the windows on the doors and all the windows so that you couldn't see inside or outside. Okay those weren't here at the end of second last period.

"What did you do?" I asked Tyrone from behind me but he was long gone.

Since when did he learn to sneak off silently?

I turned back to the blocked off gym and sighed, well might as well just get this over with for their amusement.

I opened the door slowly into a dimly-lit gym with a rainbow disco ball type thing making rainbow lights go around the room. There was a group of people at the far end who shouted out "SURPRISE!" when they saw me enter the room.

I was frozen in place while I took in everything. There were tables set to one side and a dance floor with a DJ booth at the front of it. Kyra ran up to me and pulled me into a hug as the rest of the room burst out into the happy birthday song.

"It's not even my birthday," I said a little uneasy at this whole situation. Kyra was smiling brightly. I bet she planned this whole thing too.

She rolled her eyes, "your mom called me and told me that your birthday was on Sunday and she wanted to plan something but, well, we know you don't like celebrating your birthday. However, this is your sixteenth birthday and you kind of need to at least celebrate a little bit. So like in an hour when you get bored it will be totally fine if you sneak away to go home."

I gave her a pained look. She was the only one who knew why I didn't like to celebrate my birthday and she had went behind my back and planned this whole thing. Was she serious? She's my best friend. Best friends don't do this.

"Kyra, I can't do this," I started and she leaned into my ear to whisper something.

"Look at it this way, its not actually your birthday today so that means its also not the anniversary. You can have fun today, can't you?"

She was right. I hated when she was right.

I groaned at her, "fine I'll stay for an hour or so but if I get sad at any point I'm leaving."

She clapped her hands together excitedly as the DJ started to play some really well-known song and people started to dance. "Yay! You're going to have so much fun!"

Before I followed her out to the dance floor I checked my phone and saw a text from my mom telling me that the guests were coming over tomorrow night and to have fun.

I guess that's huge weight lifted off my shoulders. But I need to have a serious talk with my mom about this planning stuff behind my back. This birthday surprise will not happen again until I'm at least 40. By then I'll probably be a mom and have super secret mom senses and know its happening anyways.
