Waves of emotions crashed over me as I stared up at the group of teenage boys. Shock, fear, confusion, anger, worry. No one spoke a word for a long moment before I finally broke the silence. "What did you do with my friends?" I asked, that being my top concern. Confused whispers rippled through the crowd and my eyes darted to each boy questioningly. What had happened to the Gladers, where could they be, and who were these sticks in their place.
Distracted by my own thoughts I didn't even notice someone jump into the box until I felt the reverberation through the metal and I spun around to see a tall blond boy standing there. "Let's first get you out of here, and then we'll start asking questions." He said in an accent that as I recalled from my vague knowledge of the outside world, was British. I narrowed my eyes slightly but didn't stop him from helping me, after all, I had spent the last few hours in there, and I was happy to get out.
Stepping onto the hard ground outside of the box I looked around, taking in the faces of each boy as they crowded around me. I felt my heart hammering in my chest, and so many questions ran through my brain, but I took a slow breath trying to stay calm, this was not the time I needed to break down.
Soon a dark skinned older boy stepped through the crowd of gawking boys to address me. "Welcome to the Glade." He said simply and I crossed my arms. "Thanks, I already know that. What I want to know, is why you all are here." I said raising my eyebrows slightly. He exchanged a look with the blond boy before turning back to me. "We've been here two years." He said watching my expression which changed at his words. My defensive posture changed to one of confusion as my arms fell and my eyes widened once more. "But... How.. We..." As I spoke I took a look behind him at the Glade and I froze. This was the Glade, but it wasn't my Glade.
Little things were different. The buildings were all in the same places but there were certain repairs and accents that weren't where I was from. The changes were so subtle but it told me so much as the knot in my stomach got bigger. Where was I?
