The next 30 minutes was arguing between the Keepers about what to do with me. It took a lot of self control, but I stayed quiet, going to only defend myself if the options got too extreme, which became difficult with each of Gally's idiotic suggestions.
"Ok that's enough!" Alby yelled standing up from his chair and the room fell silent as they all turned to look at their leader. "Some of you make valid points." "But not all of you." I muttered taking a glance at Gally. "But, the truth of the matter is, we don't know why she was sent here, or if she's working with the creators. So, because of that she's a free person." A few of the keepers grumbled some complaints but no one out right told Alby he was wrong. "Still," he started turning to look at me. "You will be observed. And if we have reason to believe that you are working with the creators... Well, I don't think I need to go into that." I narrowed my eyes for a short moment but nodded.
"Good that. So is the thing over? I'm getting tired of listening to you shanks." Minho remarked and Alby rolled his dark eyes but nodded. "Yes this Gathering is complete." He responded signaling for all the guys to leave. I quickly got up from my seat and left, yet to where I was headed, was a mystery to me.
I was barely out the door of the Homestead when someone grabbed my arm. I spun around to see Gally, his eyes boring into me like he wanted to kill me on the spot. "Just because they don't think you're a concern, doesn't mean that I don't. I don't believe for a second that you're an innocent." I scoffed and snatched my arm away. "Yeah well you're going to have to get used to it. Because I am!" I said glowering up at him, his height not intimidating me. "I'll be watching you." He sneered and I rolled my eyes. "Enjoy the view." I replied sarcastically before walking away, and I didn't need to turn around to know he was glaring daggers into the back of my skull.
As night feel upon the Glade, I found myself sitting on a bench near the box. I sighed pulling my knees up to my chest and resting my chin upon them. As my first day in this Glade came to a close, I began to think once again about my group. What was going on there? Were they worried about me? Did they think I had been killed by a Griever? My chest tightened and I wondered if I would ever see them again, or if I would die here and they would never know. Unfortunately the latter seemed the more probable of the two.
I was surprised out of my thoughts, when I caught sight of Newt heading towards me. For the first time, I noticed his limp and briefly wondered how he had gotten it before he was finally in front of me. "Hey, I thought you might be hungry." He said handing me a plate of dinner. I stared at the plate for a moment before looking up and smiling at him. "Thanks, I didn't even think about dinner, I really just wanted to get out of there." I said taking the plate from him. He nodded sitting down as well. "Yeah. Well it's understandable. It's been a petty crazy day for all of us."
"I think I made a pretty good entrance." I said before taking a bite. Newt chuckled looking out at the darkened Glade. "I don't think you had much of choice, besides make a grand entrance, being the first girl and all." I nudged him lightly. "Hey, don't downplay my victory!" I said jokingly. He gave me a sideways glance, a smile playing at his lips.
"Are you worried?" He asked after a moment of silence. I turned my body to face him better. "Worried?" I asked simply. "That you won't see your Glade again?" He asked and I had to pause. Was I worried? "No..." I finally said and he fully turned his head to look at me. "Yeah don't get me wrong, I miss them, but I don't want to go back. I want to get out. Out of the creators grasp on me and my life. I want to go back to the life I hope I have outside of these stupid walls." I said with a flick of my wrist towards the north wall.
He gave me a long stare, before sighing. "It's hard for me to imagine what life is like outside of the maze. Once you're here long enough, this becomes your entire world, whether you like it or not. Hope of getting out dwindled a long time ago for me." I looked at him, his eyes echoing the words he had just spoke. "You sound like my girls. They didn't believe there was a way out either." His head tilted up looking at the blackened sky. "Well, I don't think anyone still does believe there is a way out."
"I refuse to give up trying. I refuse to give up hope. I refuse to believe that there is no way out of here! I promised myself a long time ago that I would be out of there." A sarcastic laugh left his mouth as he looked at me once more. "Well I guess you got your wish. You're no longer there." I sighed looking down for a brief second before refocusing on Newt. "Well that just makes me want to work even harder."
"Do you really believe that there's an escape to this place. That you can really get out." I clenched my fists hoping my determination resonated through my expression. "I'd bet my life on it." "That might be your answer right there." Newt pushed himself off the bench and was about to walk away when I spoke up again. "What do you mean?" I asked tilting my head slightly as he stopped and turned to look at me. "The only way to get out of here, may be through death."
