Hey Avery :) I'm outside. You want me to come up or meet outside?
I typed into my phone.
I'll be out in a minute :) I laughed at her quick response.
I turned off the sports car I drove her in the other night and leaned back in my seat. The windows were all down, giving a breeze to the small space. Sunglasses were perched on top of my nose, and I felt like a superstar. I laughed at the thought, because that's what I want to be, actually. I write songs and have a lot of good ones- so my friends tell me- and I'm trying to find a company that will sign me, but it's harder than it seems.
I turned the stereo down as the door opened.
“ Hey, Beautiful.” I said. Nice Ed... Smooth.
“ Hi.” She smiled sweetly. “ So were are we going?” She had a baby blue shirt on, tucked into shorts. She looked perfect, all the way down to her black vans. Her red hair was french braided back into a ponytail where the ends curled just slightly. She looked like she had just walked out of a movie and on to the red carpet.
“ I'm not sure yet.” I admitted. I hadn't planned that far ahead. I was just stoked that she wasn't done with me yet. “ How about lunch? I'm starving.” I said just as my stomach rumbled.
“ Sounds good.” She went to texting on her phone and I kept to driving. Maybe we could have a picnic later... I looked away from the road to watch her for a minute. Her frown pasted on her lips told me that whoever she was talking to, she didn't want to be talking to anymore.
“ Are you okay? You seem... distant.” I asked.
“ Yeah... I just need to find better friends.” She never looked away from her phone.
I had no clue how to respond to that, so I just left it hanging in the air.
I pulled into the parking lot of a local cafe and rolled the windows up as I shut off the car.
“ I hope you like this place. It was my favorite restaurant when I first ate here. Now, I go to that little place down the road.” I pointed to the small diner down the road as she put her phone away.
Finally...
“ Do you know how to dance?” I tried to make conversation at the table. She was nibbling on her potatoes, but she mostly just pushed them around with her fork and stared at her phone each time it lit up. I'll admit that I was a bit curious and rude at times when I took a look at her screen. They were mostly calls and texts from Collin, but a few were from Becka. I had met Becka the morning after the night that Avery and I met, if that makes any sense, and I thought she was lovely. She didn't seem to fond of me, being that I was a stranger, I had a one night fling with her friend, and I was about three years older than her. Avery seems to think I'm only a few months older than her, but I've told her numerous times that I am at least two years older than her.
“ Not really. Why?” Avery's face was finally away from her screen, so I took the opportunity to hold the conversation.
“ I was thinking of going dancing later...” Her face lit up and held my gaze.
“ Which club?” She asked.
“ You'll see.” I winked at her.
**********
“ This isn't funny! Ed... Look what I'm wearing...” She pulled down her knee high black dress, shifting uncomfortably and letting go of my hand in frustration.
“ You look gorgeous. Especially the shoes. Cheetah print looks sexy on you.” I nudged her shoulder, trying to get a laugh out of her, quite successfully, I might add. I looked around the ballroom, scanning for a table.
“ Ed, I thought you said we were going to a club...”
“ I said dancing. You assumed club.” She punched me in the arm as I smirked at her.
“ You know, tomorrow is my last night here. Then we go to Ireland, then home.” Her teacher told them the wrong information at the beginning of the trip, so he basically messed the whole trip up. They got a week in the place they were before, about a week and a half here, and they only get five days in Ireland. The rest of the time in Europe is going to be split into four places- France, Spain, Greece, and italy.
“ Yeah, I figured the end was coming.” I hesitated, then moved my hands lower on her back, pulling her closer to me on the dance floor.
“ Well it kind of had to...” She looked down and sighed. I moved my hand under her face and pulled it up.
“ Chin up, love. I'm not going anywhere.” I pecked her lips and pulled her closer, swaying to classical music.
