What if?

20. Memory

          So here I am with Calum on the roof of the hospital. He asked me about Luke and I earlier so I decided to tell him since he promised to listen. "Luke and I aren't exactly in any kind of relationship if you ask me. We both like each other or atleast I like him and I'm not sure about h-"

          "Luke likes you just as much as you do so yeah. Get that registered into your head." Calum cut in.

           "I mean he did say he loves me the other day.." "He did??? He finally did?? That boy never tells me anything anymore. Anyways, this solves your problem then. You love him, he loves you!" He said reaching into his back pocket for a cigarette.

          "Why do you smoke Cal? To relieve stress? To look cool?" I asked. "I don't know Charlotte but right now it's about you, not me so just go on with you and Luke." "If you're going to smoke then I'm going back to where I should be, watching my body." I said turning around and heading to the door. I don't know if I would even be able to smell it but I don't care. I've always hated people smoking around me.

          "Wait!" Calum said stepping before me, "Fine I won't smoke. But why are you getting all worked up over this?" I hesitated but decide to tell him anyways, "Dad used to smoke. A lot. My brothers and I picked it up eventually. I don't smoke often, only when I have like really bad days. But my dad and brothers smoked daily. I hated it. I hated the smoke and I hate what it does to our bodies. I don't need another person I care about to risk his life just for satisfaction or for fun. I just don't.." I said looking down. Silence fell upon the both of us.

          "I'm sorry. But now you know.." I said, Calum just nodded, not making any eye contact with me.

           "Do you still want to talk about your relationship with Luke or do you want me to leave? Because if you need some time alone I don't mind." He said. I thought for awhile, since no one but Calum could see me, I should might as well appreciate the company.

           "No. Stay. You're the only person I have left, atleast for now so yeah.. Plus, I get to tell you about the things Luke and I do and you're willing to listen! So why not?" I said smiling at him. He returned it walking to a wall and sitting down, resting his back on it. "Now tell me, have you guys done it yet?" He asked wiggling his eyebrows. I blushed and joined him.

           "Um.. Sex? Nah. Too soon and... I'm.. I'm a virgin.." "It's not wrong being a virgin if that's what you're worried about Charlotte. It's no big deal. Really. So tell me about you and Luke. How you met and all of that. I'm all ears." Calum said smiling at me. "Okay well get ready for a long long story." I said laughing. "It all started on my first day here in Sydney.."

          I told him everything about how Luke fell which lead to our unexpected date to the amusement park the next day and meeting him and Michael for the first time to the incident at Maccas then to the beach. That was when I realized, within those three days, Luke and I had managed to do all those things. All those events that I will forever look back and just wonder how I got so lucky.

            I watched Calum's expressions change as I continued telling him my stories. I really liked this, having someone listen to you without interrupting and questioning everything. For awhile I actually forgot that I wasn't actually here and that I was actually in a coma. But it doesn't bother me as much anymore. I'm just glad that someone could actually see me and that it was someone I knew. We were.. bonding.

            Putting the hate behind us and becoming friends. I like him as a friend more than someone I hate who hates me.

           "Hey Calum, thank you." He looked at me with his eyebrows scrunched together. "For apologizing and all of that. I like you as a friend. I hope we will stay friends after this." I said laughing at his face.

          "Ohhh.. Yeah sure of course! I like you more as a friend than someone to hate anyways. I really enjoy this bonding session. Maybe I could be the guy you call up for a rant about your boyfriend or something." He said teasing me. "Ha ha very funny. Do you want to hear about the rest of the things we did or not? Because if you don't want to, I don't mind going back into that boring old room with Luke you know? OH MY GOD LUKE! We should go check on him!"

           We ran back towards my room to find Luke asleep with my hand in his. How I wish I could hold it back.

           Calum shook him to wake him up and said, "Luke, go home and get some rest. I'll watch her for you and I'll call you if anything happens." "Huh? What? Oh Calum. What are you doing here? No I can't leave. Not now. But I thought you didn't want to see her? Did you finally grow some balls?" Luke teased.

            "Oh shut up! I'll call you if anything happens okay? Go home and get the rest you need! Go!" Calum shooed him away. "Okay okay. Thanks man. See ya!" "Bye Luke!" Calum said pushing Luke out the door.

            "Okay where were we? After the beach..?" Calum said as I wiped away some tears and laughed at his eagerness.

           "Yeah after the beach, he dropped me off back at my hotel, I hugged him and I skipped all the way to my room. Yes yes you can mock me for being such a little girl but hey I'm such a shy thumb and a hug is a lot. But that night I had this awful nightmare but somehow Luke knew.." I paused remembering the nightmare.

           "..He called me telling me he was coming over. I still have no idea how he even knew something was wrong. I mean it was a nightmare but it hit me pretty hard. I was shaking and crying. I'm just glad he came over immediately because I really needed someone. I eventually fell asleep thanks to Luke." I said smiling at the memory.

            "I hope you know that you can call me if you want to talk to someone about anything.." Calum said looking at me in the eye.

           "I know now. Thank you." I said smiling. We were silently sitting there just smilung at each other when Calum spoke up. "Well, continue your story!!" "You can't rush perfection Cal!" "It's just a story about what happened in the past week! Charrr." He teased. "Okay fine! So.."
