The Teacher's Assistant
.:Chapter 9: Being Ignored:.
I squinted my eyes at the stark contrast of light as I stepped into my Language Arts classroom. I stopped as soon as I was past the thresh hole, lowering my hand from my eyes as they adjusted to bright light. I felt a shove from behind as Mr. Andrews ran into my back as he closed the door and lowered the shade from the window on the door behind us. "Oh, sorry." I muttered half-heartedly looking around the room for any booby traps or mysterious men with guns. We were usually only allowed to close the "curtain" during testing because on the other end it said the words "Testing in Progress" and putting it down at any other time would be "against the rules" according to Mr. Kirkland.
He walked me into the rest of the room without saying anything. He pointed to a desk on the farthest end of the classroom and told me to sit. I obeyed still looking around the room for something, anything, anyone. What the hell are we doing here? Then suddenly the door to the storage closet opened and some guy strolled out in with an angry look on his face. But it wasn't directed at me. It was directed at Tyler who was in front of the classroom leaning on Mr. Kirkland's desk with his hands stuffed in his pockets. The mystery guy was wearing a pair of dark blue denim jeans, a dark blue blazer, a dark gray vest with tiny white squares covering it and a white button down shirt underneath.
Altogether, he looked like a killer.
Complete with a gun sticking out his belt and a cigarette behind his ear. Is this the guy who wants me dead? Why would he want me dead? I didn't do anything to him! I don't even know the guy! What the hell?!
He walked pass me without so much as a glance my way and stood in front of Tyler. "What the hell is wrong with you, Tyler?" Was the first thing he said.
"Hello to you too, Eric." Was Tyler's reply.
"Bringing her here? What was going through that thick skull of yours?" The killer, Eric, continued not paying attention to Tyler's gibe.
"I'm fine thank you for asking. As a matter of fact I got a new plant for my apartment the other day. I think it'll go great next to the televi-."
"Will you shut up?!" Eric yelled which Tyler returned with an amused smirk. This was actually really interesting. I know I should probably do something. But Eric's reactions to Tyler's banters were just too damn funny. I mean, I don't even know the guy but I can tell that Tyler easily gets on his nerves.
Tyler crossed his arms over his chest and his right leg over his left as he got comfortable. "Well, if you would have just asked nicely..." Tyler trailed off.
"Will you stop playing around?!? Isn't that would got you in this mess in the first place? Z told you to go and kill her. He didn't tell you to go to her house and eat her food." Now that got my attention.
"Who's 'Z'"?" I asked but my voice came out small and barely audible compared to their angry shouting. So I repeated it. "Who's Z?" Now, I know they could hear but they were just ignoring me. So I settled back in my chair and crossed my arms like a good little girl.
"I know, I know." Tyler was saying waving his hand nonchalantly. "But if you'd been there you would've wanted to eat her food too. I mean, I would hate for good food to go to waste." Tyler explained. And I couldn't help but feel... for lack of a better word, appreciated, for his odd but genuine compliment.
"I mean, you stalled for a whole week. A week in which you could've finished with this assignment and gone on with another assignment. If it were me I would've just killed the bitch." Eric muttered rubbing his fingers across his chin thoughtfully.
