Nick
Hearing Lyric's voice come out of my phone was like a blow to my gut. It was only one word, but it sounded like her. Demi & I looked at each other after I parked the car & we both were hoping it really was her. Demi looked speechless, so I spoke up. "Lyric?"
"Daddy?" I heard Lyric say, in a quiet sob.
"Lyric, where are you?" I asked, holding Demi's hand that held my phone, since she was shaking & I didn't want her to accidentally disconnect it.
"I don't know." Lyric's voice was shaky & quiet, so I panicked.
"Are you okay?" I asked, swallowing, afraid of the answer.
"Yea. She's not hurting me. We were at one place, then we moved to another place, but I was blindfolded or asleep when we moved. She's keeping me locked in the basement, but this one has a nice basement. I managed to pick the lock when I knew she was going to the drug store to get my insulin."
Demi & I both let out a sigh of relief, knowing she was getting her insulin. "Who has you? What's this woman's name?" Demi asked.
"I don't know her name. She hasn't told me, but she knew me as a baby." Lyric answered, her voice still a whisper.
"Lyric, can you look around where you are & see if you can find some mail that might have an address on it?" Demi mentioned & I nodded at her, thinking that was a great idea.
We heard rustling. "I'm scared she's gonna come back while I'm on the phone. I see magazines but they all have different addresses. The city, though is the same for all of them. San Diego. Do you think that's where I'm at?"
"Maybe. We're gonna find you, baby. I promise. Is there anything else around you that might be helpful to us. Can you go outside at all?" I asked, then held my breath.
"The door is locked from the outside, I think, because I couldn't get it open & there are bars on the windows. Daddy?"
My heart was aching in my chest hearing her say, 'daddy,' since she sounded so scared. "Yes, baby." I said, over the lump in my throat.
"You're gonna come find me soon, right? You're not going to forget about me are you?"
I felt my heart break & closed my eyes as the tears burned my eyelids. "I promise I will find you soon. I could never forget about you. Never ever. And I will never stop looking for you, Lyric, until I find you. I promise you that, with every part of my being. I love you so much & you have to hang in there until we can find you." My voice was cracking, so I took a deep breath.
"I love you, Lyric. So much. You keep remembering how strong you are. Let our love be your armor." Demi added, closing her eyes & making me want to scream out in agony.
"I will. Please hurry, though. I heard her on the phone talking to someone & she wants to go to Tijuana." Lyric said, then she gasped. "I hear her car. She's back. Hurry. I gotta go n..." The phone went dead & Demi screamed out Lyric's name, then started repeating her name into the phone.
"She's gone, Demi." I said in a quiet voice. "But... she's alive. We know she's alive." I took my phone from her hand & put it in my shirt pocket. Demi started sobbing, so I squeezed her hand. "We're going to the house so we can tell the police. We're going to find her."
"Who has her?" Demi asked as I put the car in 'drive' & backed it out of the parking spot. "We need to call Kris & see if she knows who would have known her as a baby."
"We'll call Kris as soon as we can. She might have some information from when Lyric was in foster care. We'll find out. I'm not going to stop searching until I find out who could have taken her."
