Nick
"Your son." "Complication." These are the words that echoed in my head as I tried to find my voice. I swallowed & cleared my throat. "Complication?" I managed to spit out. "With my son?"
"Well, the complication, I was referring to, was with your wife. Your son is being evaluated in the NICU because, at 36 weeks, he's considered premature & also because we aren't sure if he lost any oxygen right before he was born. He appears to be okay, as far as I can tell & once he's settled in the NICU & remains stable, someone will take you to see him. They'll keep evaluating him for a few hours to see how long he will need to stay in the NICU." Dr. Malone said, looking confident about my son being okay. I felt a tiny sense of relief. "He's a healthy weight, though. He was born at 7 pounds, one ounce, which is within the normal range."
Hearing how much my son weighed gave me relief on another level, but I was still concerned about the complication. "So... Demi... what was the complication? Is she okay?" I covered my mouth with my hand, fearing the worst.
"She's still under sedation, but she will be okay. She lost a lot of blood so we had to give her some transfusions. The bleeding was so severe & we couldn't get it to stop, I had no choice but to do a hysterectomy. It was necessary to save her life."
I didn't know much about the female internal anatomy, but I did know what a hysterectomy was. "Hysterectomy? So she can't have any more children?" I stuttered, knowing this was going to devastate Demi.
Dr. Malone frowned, then sighed. "Well, she can't have them the conventional way. I didn't remove her tubes or ovaries, though. I will discuss all the details when I explain it to her."
I felt a tiny sense of relief, but I knew how much it would mean to Demi to give birth to any future children. "Can I see her?" I asked.
"She's in recovery, until she wakes up, so once she's awake, you can see her." Dr. Malone said, then cleared his throat. "Do you have any other questions?"
I shook my head, slightly, then put my finger up. "Not a question, but a request. I want to be there when you tell her what happened during her surgery."
"Of course." Dr. Malone nodded, then he left the room.
Joe put his hand on my shoulder. "They're fine. Both of them are fine. That's what's most important."
I nodded & ran my hand over my mouth. "I'm going to focus on that." I turned to look at Lyric, who was watching me with tears in her eyes.
"Mom's going to be so sad. She wanted to have more babies."
I walked to squat in front of Lyric, as she sat on the couch. "She will be sad, but we can still have more kids. There are ways we would have to give a lot of thought to. And we can always adopt, if we want. Her & your baby brother are okay. That's great news, isn't it?"
