Nick
I picked up Lyric from Joe's house & I turned around in the front seat to watch her get in the car. She gave me a big smile that was just what I needed to see. I missed her, even if she'd only been away from me for half a day. "I missed you." I said & her smile got even bigger. "Is Batman being any trouble?" I asked.
Lyric shook her head & shrugged. "Not really. She's annoying Winston, but Winston is old, so everything annoys him."
I laughed, nodding my head, knowing she was right. "You excited to maybe meet your baby brother?" I looked at her in the reflection of the rear view mirror.
"I've never been more excited about something in my entire life." She replied, beaming proudly. "He's so cute in the pictures you sent me."
"Yea, he's pretty cute."
"You have to say that, since you're his dad." Lyric chuckled.
"True. But even his nurses have said he was cute."
"Oh well then he must be the cutest baby they've ever seen."
"Probably. I know I've never seen a cuter baby boy."
"Hey, Dad? Is Mom going to be home in time for trick or treating?"
"I don't know, sweetie. If she is, she might not feel up to it. She had to have surgery, so she's going to be sore for quite a while." I answered, then sighed. I knew how much Demi & Lyric both loved Halloween, so I knew it was disappointing to either of them if they couldn't share it together. "But don't worry, you'll get to go trick or treating, regardless. I know you worked hard on your costume."
"Yea. It won't be the same if Mom can't go. Mom was going to dress up, too as a pregnant zombie, but that won't work now." I heard her laugh, quietly, but she sounded a little sad.
"You don't need mom for your bride costume do you?"
"No. I just was looking forward to it. And I'm a corpse bride, Dad, not just a bride."
"Oh, yea that's right." I grinned at her in the mirror. "Sorry, if I'm having trouble remembering. I think it's because the thought of you as a bride in any way, shape or form doesn't sit well with me."
Lyric rolled her eyes as she smiled & shook her head. "My karate tournament is in two weeks, Dad. Will you guys be able to come?"
"Of course, Baby. We wouldn't miss that." I said & caught her reflection as she, softly, smiled, looking out the window.
I drove to the hospital, with Lyric talking about all the things she had coming up. I knew how busy it was going to be, but I wondered if she was making sure we didn't forget about her, since we had a new baby to care for. I assured her, without coming out & saying it, that we wouldn't forget about her activities, just because we had Lincoln.
