Nick
I didn't want to think about who took Lyric, but it was exhausting forcing myself to not think about it. The police & the FBI were looking into the lead they got on the Youtube video, but Demi wasn't convinced it would lead to them finding her.
It was after one in the morning the night Lyric disappeared & things were starting to die down in the house. Agents & officers started to leave for the night, only leaving a handful, so I convinced Demi to go up to our bedroom. I closed the door as she stood in the middle of the room, staring at the wall that was covered with framed photos of us with Lyric or just Lyric by herself. I walked up behind her & wrapped my arms around her waist. "I just wanted to be alone with you, so we could cry on each other's shoulder." I murmured in her ear.
She nodded, slowly, then I saw her close her eyes. "I don't think I'm going to be able to sleep." She whispered, leaning her head against my shoulder.
"We don't have to sleep, but I have to say that sleep is important, sweetie. Especially being pregnant. You don't want to get sick, then you won't be able to help search for Lyric."
Demi sighed, then pushed away from me. "I'll try, but I'm not promising anything." She sat on the edge of the bed & looked down at her hands in her lap. I started getting undressed, then heard her quiet sobs. When I looked at her, I saw her shaking, so I knew she was crying again. I couldn't blame her at all, but it broke my heart, anyway. I sat beside her & put my arm around her shoulders, pulling her toward me. She buried her face in my shoulder & the sobbing got louder & harder.
I held Demi for a few minutes, trying to comfort her, even though this wasn't making her feel better. My own tears were filling my eyes, even though I tried to keep them from coming. "We're going to find her, Demi. She's going to be back home to us soon."
I heard Demi sniffling, then she sat up so she could look at me. Her weepy eyes & painful expression broke my heart, but what she said, literally, killed me. "What if they're hurting her? What if they're raping her, Nick?"
"Don't." I said in a sharp tone & she stared at me, blinking with her mouth open a little. "Don't go there. We can't think about that. It's only going to make it harder for us."
"I'm being realistic. I can't not think about it. It's all I think about." Her shoulders lifted a little, then her hands came up to her face to cover her eyes.
"You need to force yourself to stop. That's all there is to it. I'm doing that very same thing. I'm trying not to think about that possibility, Demi, because when my mind goes there, I want to kill someone. When she comes home to us, if I find out someone hurt her, in any way, shape or form, I will go to prison for murder."
Demi pulled her hands down & squeezed her eyes shut, as another sob she had been holding in, came out. I pulled her to my chest again. "What if she never comes home?" Demi asked in between sobs.
"She is coming home, dammit. I won't stop until she's found. I swear to you, Demi, I am never giving up. She will come home because she's our daughter & she doesn't give up. She's a fighter." My voice cracked as the lump, in my throat, got bigger. I tried to believe what I was saying, but I had my doubts. In the back of my mind, I couldn't help but wonder if I'd ever see Lyric again.
After Demi cried against my shoulder for awhile, she finally sat up & wiped her cheeks. "I'm going to take a bath. Maybe that will help me relax." She said in a quiet voice as she stood up. I held her hand for a moment, then nodded at her before she went into the bathroom. I stood up to walk around to the other side of the bed, then jumped when Demi came running out of the bathroom. "Oh my God. Her insulin. Do the police know she's diabetic?"
