~ Chapter Four ~
"To love, is to receive a glimpse of heaven." ~ Karen Sunde
Age: 16
The sunlight slayed my eyes as I slowly woke up. I don't know why, but I can't sleep when it's sunny. As soon as the light hits my bedroom window, you can guarantee I'm up.
I set up in bed, my arms still on the covers, looking around my room. Today was my sixteenth birthday. I didn't feel any different. I looked down at my white, crumpled pajamas and sighed, I didn't look any different either.
"Bitch! You better be up!" I heard Lily say, before she came crashing through my bed room door. Literally. She crashed. I watched as she fell to the floor, with the bags she had carried tumbling beside of her. A giggle fell from my mouth and she rose her head up slightly and glared at me. "Glad to see this amuses you, I'll be here all week." She muttered, getting up and grabbing the bags she had with her.
She grinned at me and handed me four gift bags, "Happy birthday, Bestie!" I smiled at her and took them, "Aw, Lil, you shouldn't have." She waved her hand and set beside me on the bed. "Hush and open them already." I laughed and looked inside the first one I came to.
After I thanked Lil for all the gifts she got me, a necklace, book, shoes, and perfume; we got ready for my birthday cookout at Miranda's. It was a tradition. Every year everyone would gather at my sister's house, Lil, Aunt Debbie and Nelly, John, Miranda, the rest of the family. Even Aiden and his friends.
Yes I do put them in a different category.
As Lily was curling her hair, I grudgingly walked to my closet and pushed my clothes on down the rack. There, unfortunately hanging, was the only three dresses I owned. One for church. One for funerals. The other for my birthday cookouts. Each one, I had worn a million times.
I pulled out my cookout dress, the white one, and shut my closet door. Lily saw me looking at the dress I was holding as if I wanted to shred it and laughed. "Your aunt Nelly still makes you wear that dress?" I nodded and replied, "Yes, A dress makes you a lady, and you're a lady on those occasions." I imitated Aunt Nelly's voice. Lily laughed and shook her head, looking back at the mirror to apply her makeup.
I put on the stupid white dress, to which was starting to get a little short from having it since I was fourteen, and walked over beside of Lily to apply a little mascara. I don't really wear makeup or fix my hair, but I do love mascara.
Lil and I stood there, staring at ourselves in the mirror. "You look pretty." Lil said. I smiled and replied, "You too."
"It's because I got these incredible boobs to fill it out!" She said, grabbing herself. I laughed and shook my head. She watches way too much 13 Going on 30, but it was her favorite movie.
"Girls! Time to go!" I heard aunt Nelly yell from downstairs. Lil and I looked at each other and dashed towards the stairs, trying to beat the other one.
As we stumbled down the steps, me winning by the way, Aunt Nelly and Debbie was already at the door. They rose their eyebrows at us but didn't comment, they were used to our craziness by now.
