Chapter 17: Paint

Naru's P.O.V

I walked down the hallway. Mai's going to wear a bikini, was the only thing on my mind. Maybe I should go just in case Mai gets harassed.

'Pervert', I heard someone say.

I looked around the room like a madman. I sighed in relief, at least there was no one from SPR to see that. 'Who said that', I asked myself.

'Me', they replied.

Then, I knew who was talking to me. 'Really Gene, you finally talk to me after our important conversation yesterday.'

I could just feel the smirk he had on. 'Well, I only started talking to you for now since I'm actually in an airplane with Modoka coming to help you win Mai over.'

I sighed in irritation, 'Didn't you just wake up a few hours ago?' I had gotten a call from my parents saying that Gene was finally awake.

'Yep,' he replied, 'anyway, do you remember what I told you yesterday?'

I remembered it clearly, 'Of course I do; you said that Mai would speak the truth, but it may sound like lies.'

'Good, I'll help you decipher what I meant without actually telling you. Now, I have to go, the plane's about to leave.' Was his parting words.

I blocked his thoughts from mind. I wanted to find out what he meant by that. I thought back from yesterday at the base when the gang was teasing Mai.

~Flashback~

"We're not dating, I mean it, we aren't," I heard Mai say.

~Flashback End~

Then I got it; she was telling the truth of them not dating. The things she did with James was all an act. But the reason why she did all those acts was all a question I intended to find out soon.

I questioned my deciphering; what about when Mai was in the arms of James? Was that an act as well? I remembered something else; Mai's clumsiness. She must of fell and it caused that awkward tension between the two.

"Hey Naru, we finished what you wanted us to do. What should we do now?" I heard someone ask from behind me.

I turned around and noticed that the whole gang was there. "Well, it's lunch time; go get lunch," was my answer. I checked the time on the wall. 2:00.

They nodded their heads and was about to leave until Lin asked me a question. "Did Gene tell you about arriving here tomorrow?"

I nodded my head yes. "Of course, he's my brother so he has to tell me about coming here to talk with me."

"Then you know that Modoka is coming?"

I nodded, "Now that that's all said, leave and get your lunch so we could do more research." With that, they all left. I looked to the ceiling and sat there, looking at the information Yasuhara gathered.

There was nothing about deaths, nothing about haunting, no bad occurrences, and no accidents. I was beginning to think that the ghost has come after Mai for coming here from Japan two years ago. It could be a poltergeist, but why target Mai for coming here.

"Naru," someone interrupted my thoughts. I looked to the door to see Lin. "Are you coming to eat with us?" I could see he knew what I was thinking about.

I nodded, "Of course," I answered honestly. I got off the seat and went towards the door to leave. I walked out and noticed that the whole gang was in the hallway waiting for me to come out. "You do know that you could have left without me, right?"

They all nodded, "We know, it's just that we don't really remember how to get to the cafeteria." Ayako said, "Lin wouldn't tell us anything since he's quiet and we couldn't follow him there since he was going to wait for you."

Monk added, "And so, we complained and here you are. Listening to us talk about how we had to wait 5 minutes for you."

"Indeed, it was torture waiting that long for food," Yasuhara exclaimed.

Masako's face held a small smile. "Yasuhara, stop exaggerating, now shouldn't we start going to the cafeteria this time."

John nodded at Masako's statement. "I must agree, let's actually leave base and eat lunch."

I nodded, starting to join the conversation. I walked towards the cafeteria with the gang behind me.

Surprisingly, the cafeteria wasn't as crowded I originally thought it would be. I walked towards the empty lunch line and got my food. The food looked okay, there was tea, but I didn't take it. I prefer Mai's tea the most.

I sat down at one of the tables and began to eat. I noticed how the whole gang sitting with me starting to talk with each other. As a normal routine, Ayako and Monk began to fight. I was irritated by the time I finished my entire lunch. I got up and gave my tray to one of the workers in the cafeteria.

I left the group and headed towards base. Then Lin started to walk with me. I stopped at where the attack was this morning. It appears the wording was starting to fade away. I looked to the floor and saw that there was no blood where the victim lied.

I looked closely at the words trying to figure out if the words were really made out of the victim's blood. I noticed something with the words immediately. It wasn't the girl's blood, it was actually paint. It smelt weird when we saw it at first, but I guess since we were more interested with the words, we didn't notice the smell. I put it together; the ghost doesn't harm many people, so it's words were made with red paint and not blood.

"Lin, call Mai and tell her that the ghost is only after her and that the ghost isn't really trying to hurt others," I said. Now this is interesting, the ghost seems to know Mai and something happened between them, 'causing this spirit to stay in this world. I walked towards base, having another need to keep Mai safe. 'What a ghost magnet she is.'

Me: Hey guys!! I updated, I hope you're as happy as I am right now. I am writing this author's note at like 12:03 in the morning on 11/28/15. I went shopping for anime merchandise on black Friday. I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and I had to celebrate for two more days for my entire family. I created a new story regarding when I'll update since you liked the idea. Now give it up for Ayako!!
