Chapter 17

This time getting ready wasn't as hard. I let my straight blond hair down and applied light make up trying to emphasis my eyes.

What to wear now that was the difficult part. I did manage to find in the back of my closet a black dress that Maggie had made me buy that I had never worn because it was too tight. It squished my boobs together making them appear slightly larger than they were the dress stopped mid-thigh, so it wasn't too short, and it was spaghetti strapped. I decided on some black slippers and topped it off with my leather jacket.

Chase hadn't exactly told me what he had planned for us and in the spur of the moment I hadn't asked what he wanted to do so I didn't want to be underdressed or too overly dressed up. The dress and my makeup were nice and simple.

As I closed my bedroom door, I noticed that mom's room was open and there was light coming from it. I wanted to tell her that I was going out. Mom was hardly ever home since the divorce, it seemed that she tried to make herself busy with her work.

"Mom?" I whispered as I opened the door cautiously peeking my head in first.

She sat on her bed with her back to the door staring at a photo album. I walked up behind her slowly I don't think she acknowledged the fact that I had entered her room or that I stood right behind her.

When I got close enough, I was able to see just what exactly it was that she was staring at so intensely.

It was her wedding album.

"Mom are you ok?" I reached to touch her shoulder.

"Hmmm? Oh, honey yeah, I'm fine. Just thinking about how young your father and I were when we got married." She rested her hand above mine as mine rested on her shoulder. "We both thought that we knew what we wanted back then, then Jason came along and then you, anyways." She smiled and turned towards me.

"Why are you doing this to yourself mom? Why are you torturing yourself like this?"

"Oh, Emma not this again. Things change, people change over time." She exasperated her shoulders slumping drastically.

"Not from one day to the next!"

"No Emma over the years. You think your father and I did this from one day to the next? No, we had been drifting apart for years now. Why would we stay together if we weren't happy with each other anymore?"

"What if I needed both of you!"

"Emma your father is still there; he hasn't gone anywhere. He still loves you, the same as I still love you."

I couldn't help the tears that escaped my eyes as my mom put her arms around my shoulders.

"Hey?" She looked at me as she rubbed my arms smoothly trying to calm me down. "You're ruining your make up?"

It sounded more of a question as she said that to me.

"Where are you going so dressed up sweetheart?" I knew she was trying to change the subject and I accepted it, being tired of crying about the same thing for too long.

I sniffled a little as I patted my eyes trying not to smudge my makeup.

I chuckled a little almost forgetting the moment that mom and I had.

"I have a date with my boyfriend." I emphasized the word boyfriend as I rolled my eyes.

"It's that boy next door?" My mom's eyes lit up a little.
