"When will he learn to talk and stop making dinosaur noises at me"
I held my nephew in my hands while Cameron fixed her food.
"He's just three months old Katie"
She laughed.
Credence looked at me with his hazel eyes and groaned loudly at me.
"Humans are descendants of dinosaurs, it's final"
"He has no scales"
"Not all dinosaurs are the same"
I made a face at the noisy baby.
"Listen little Dino-human"
I tickled his tiny stomach
"Oh god your going to make my child a weirdo"
Cameron turned away from us finishing her food.
"Too late, your his mother he's already there"
"Your mom ate the wrong berries in Africa"
I smiled at the boy who peered back to me curiously.
"I'm Katie, your cool aunt, I'll accept you for the dinosaur you want to be, your mom here will teach you how to catch fish and eat them and Leah will teach you how to dance so you can wow the ladies"
"What if he likes boys?"
Cameron turned around
"Well then by God throw that ass in a circle for the fellas"
I raised my hands.
"He's not even one and look at you"
Cameron laughed and sat next to us at the kitchen table.
"Will you feed him?"
She grumbled.
"Of course"
I kissed his chunky cheeks.
I mixed his formula and held him carefully in my arms. His blonde hair was peeking through the top of his head.
"His dad have blonde hair?"
Cameron shrugged.
"Sandy blonde hair, but I bet the brown will win"
I continued feeding the young child.
"I vote for blonde, just to raise competition"
"Hey I got a question"
Cameron put her fork down.
"Hmm?"
I stared down at credence.
"Will you baby sit him tonight, so I can have a night to regroup?"
I stared down at the child.
"Yeah, I'll be painting so maybe he will just stay calm"
Cameron smiled.
"Thank you"
___
I pushed the cradle into my studio and stared at the infant staring up at me.
"Your mom needs a night to herself so your here with me"
I sat at my desk sorting through old sketches, coming across a particular one of Reagan where she was driving aimlessly down the road, her car was one of those that you'd want to take a vacation in but it never actually made it there.
I pulled out a small canvas , big enough to fit in my lap and paint, the curious baby next to me just watching me silently as I got lost in the silence and his breathing.
"You know my mom, she had three babies, and we cried and cried and cried, so I'm told. I look just like your mommy, it's neat how dna and genetics and life works, three of the same person"
I thumbed my finger over the edge of the canvas turning it to continue painting.
"You'll understand all of it one day, you may not get to meet all the people you should've met but you'll have great people in your life"
I stared down at the painting that was nearly done, I glanced over at credence as the clock hit one thirty and the baby was sound asleep.
"Goodnight little one"
I smiled down at him.
I pulled the blanket further up around him and pulled the visor down so the light wasn't in his eyes completely.
"Maybe I'm too busy being yours to fall for somebody new"
I whispered as I stared at the completed painting of her.
"Maybe I never want too"
I smiled, setting it on the desk to dry.
I stood up and slowly pushed the cradle into my bedroom, the light from the TV emitted through the room and I only wish Reagan's figure was laying in bed waiting for me to join her.
I checked my phone seeing three unread messages from Reagan.
-my book tour is going great, I'm meeting so many new people and have gotten so many opportunities
-this is short notice, but the guy who drives the SUV for us knows who you are and when I told him you were my girlfriend he almost died. I love you!
I quickly scrolled to the last one, sent five minutes ago.
-it's nighttime here, and I'm missing you like crazy, I wish this bed had you in it because I'd sleep peacefully for once. If you get this text me back, I need to hear your voice.
I stared over at the cradle and dialed her number.
"Hello"
Her soft voice fed through my ears like angels.
"Hey"
I smiled.
"What are you doing?"
I bit my lip and sat on the edge of bed.
"Babysitting credence for cam"
"How'd that happen?"
"He was talking to me in dinosaur language and I couldn't help myself"
She began laughing and it only made my heart ache more.
"Dinosaur language?"
I smiled
"You'll have to hear it when you come back"
"I should be back within a month"
"But your getting a career started, it's what you wanted"
"I know, but I have a life with you I cannot abandon"
"You didn't abandon me, I'm with you, in ways you wouldn't know"
"Tomorrow I'm going to meet with a group of sophomores at a book store, did you know they had book stores still?"
"I've never been to one"
"They sell books and posters and pencils, these big metal carts with all kinds of books, expensive as ever, but my book was in there and people bought it"
"Money well spent"
I bit my lip.
"Who taught you how to flirt it's so noticeable?"
I laughed and laid back on my bed.
"Noticeable would be pick up lines, such as are you from Tennessee -"
"Cause your the only ten I see"
Reagan finished my sentence for me.
"But you must like how I flirt cause your my girlfriend"
I knew she was blushing cause she hung to the air long before speaking.
"One day I hope to be much more"
"I meant every word I said when I gave you that ring"
I whispered.
"I gave you my heart a long time ago, the second week we started talking I knew it was you, I had this feeling that you were it"
I felt my stomach become alive with butterflies. And then the crying of credence.
"Oh shit we woke up the baby"
I stood up and tried to give him his pacifier but he spit it out and cried harder.
"I have to call you back"
"I love you"
She hurried.
"I love you too"
I tossed my phone on the desk and picked him up
"Why are you crying?"
I rocked him gently.
"Hungry, diaper change?"
I pulled his diaper back seeing the reason he was so upset.
If I had to set in that I would cry too.
