Based on Hello by Adele, I suggest listening to it while reading

Steve kept his grip firm on his suitcase as he rolled it through through the airport. He avoided the wandering gazes of people who passed him, hoping that they wouldn't recognize him as he walked his way to his gate.

"Final call for all gates A through D, destination Washington D.C."

Steve sighed, giving the scenery outside a fleeting glance as he boarded the plane. He was in California, San Francisco to be exact, and was leaving to come and visit you.

You and him had decided to move to California during your relationship, but you were currently in Washington D.C., so Steve decided to come visit you as he did as often as he could manage.

Steve put his bag in the overhead bin, helping another older woman get hers up since she wasn't quite tall enough, and sat down in his seat.

After the safety procedure video, the engine of the plane started, beginning it's roaring sprint down the runway, and soon enough the plane was soaring through the sky.

Steve leaned against the window, with a lost gaze on his face as he watched the puffy clouds below and the tips of mountain peaks pass by.

"I'm coming back to you, (Y/N)."

~~~
Steve had called Sam to give him a ride back from the airport, which he happily obliged, not having seen Steve in quite a while.
On the ride, Steve noticed a flower shop, advertising (Y/F/F).
"Hold on, Sam. Could you stop at that flower shop for a second? I want to pick up some flowers for (Y/N)."
Sam nodded, giving Steve a small smile as he pulled off the road, and parked.
Steve hopped out of the car, telling Sam a quick thanks before jogging into the shop where he saw woman arranging a vase of chrysanthemums.
"Excuse me?" Steve asked, politely. "Could I get some of those?" He pointed to the (Y/F/F)s in the window, and the woman grinned at him.
"Big date planned?"
Steve shrugged, but returned her smile. "You could say that."
After purchasing the sweet smelling flowers, Steve went back to the car, and Sam continued driving. The radio was playing a soft song on the radio, and since the air was warm with the beginnings of spring, the windows were down and a gentle breeze passed through the car.
Steve jumped a bit when he heard Sam's throat clear from next to him, as it had been pretty quite for almost the entirety of the drive.
"We're here."
Steve gulped a bit, clutching the flowers, your flowers, in his hand, and got out of the car. He walked to the driver's side and bent down to look into the window.
"Thanks, Sam. For everything."
"No problem, Steve. Do you want me to wait here?"
Steve shook his head. "No, you can head on home. I'll probably just walk to the hotel a few blocks away."
"Alright, well, call if you need anything. I'll see you around Steve."
Sam drove off, and Steve took a deep breath, taking his first steps towards you in three months. He kneeled down, trying to swallow the lump in his throat as he looked at the white stone in front of him
(Y/N) (M/N) (L/N)
1986-2016
Loving daughter, sister, friend
Even as the sun goes down,
To end the light of day,
It's rising on a new horizon,
Somewhere far away.
Steve cleared his throat. "Hi, (Y/N). I know it's been a while since I last visited, but I just want you to know that I'm taking care of myself, just like you wanted me to."
He placed the flowers on the ground in front of the headstone, and took a deep breath.
"God, if there were only enough ways to say that I love you, because I do, (Y/N). I love you so, so much. And I miss you, too. I miss waking up to you by my side every morning. I miss cooking with you, when you acted like you knew what you were doing when we both know you didn't. I miss training with you, how you could give and take anything that we threw at you. I miss your laugh, your smile, the way you'd wrinkle your nose when I would kiss your forehead. God, I miss you, (Y/N)."
Steve tried to wipe away the tears that were flowing freely from his eyes, but they were rushing to fast to get them to stop.
"Why did you have to shove me out of the way of that bullet, (Y/N)? Why couldn't you just let me go? I can't live without you, and you have no idea how many times I considered taking a jump just so I could be with you. The only reason I haven't yet is because I promised you I'd take care of myself and I-"
Steve was sobbing now. He couldn't take it. Why were you so stupid? Couldn't you have just let him take that bullet? Couldn't you have just stayed back and let him die, peaceful and painless, instead of having to see you, broken and bloody in his arms, the light slowly leaving your (E/C) eyes.
Steve bowed his head, a tear trickling down to drop onto the top of your headstone. "I'm trying to live without you, (Y/N), but it's so damn hard, it really is."
He remembered when you whispered your last words to him, begging him to move on from you, to take care of himself, how you would forgive him if he found someone else, how you'd be happy, even.
"I-I never got to give you this." Steve said, reaching into his jeans pocket and pulling out a small velvet box. "I was going to ask you after that day but-"
He pulled out a shining diamond ring, the many sides sparkling as the setting sun hit it just right.
"I love you so much, (Y/N). I wish I could say good-bye the way you wanted me too, but saying good-bye means forgetting, and I don't want to forget my best girl."
He put the ring down next to the flowers, kissed his hand, and placed it on your head stone, before standing up and looking towards the pinkening sky.
"I'll always love you, (Y/N) (L/N)."
As he was walking out of the cemetery, Steve felt a warm breeze caress his face, and he could've sworn he could've heard your voice whisper to him from somewhere far away.
"I love you too, Steve Rogers."
