Sam

I didn’t sleep. I couldn’t. Alex had pretty much just threatened everyone and everything that I held dear. Was I supposed to be able to sleep after that? I paced my apartment, my mind running wild. I knew that I had to calm down before I lost it, but I just needed it to be early enough to call everyone. I needed to know that they were all safe. I couldn’t lose the only thing resembling a family that I had, as dysfunctional as they were.

I paced my kitchen, my bedroom and my living room for hours, pretty much covering every inch of floor in the apartment. Would he actually hurt them? Could he? Could I take the risk that he hadn’t? I was unsure of what to do. I hated being unsure. I needed to know; to know what he was planning, to know when he was planning it, and to know what to do about it.

I looked over at my window, where the sunlight was beginning to trickle through my gossamer curtains. The golden light caught on the specks of dust floating in the air, making them shine like tiny fireflies. I looked at the clock on my wall, for what must have been the thousandth time since Alex had attacked. At six a.m., unable to wait any longer, I dived over the couch and grabbed my phone, dialling Tony’s number.

It rang for a while and I started pacing again as it did. Suddenly the dial tone cut off, replaced with JARVIS’ voice.

‘I’m sorry, miss Clarke, but Mr Stark is not yet awake...’ he began, but I cut him off, I needed to know that they were ok.

‘Then wake him up, JARVIS. This is urgent.’

There was a knock at the door and I walked wearily over and looked through the peep-hole. Who would be there at six a.m.? A teenage guy stood outside my door. He swayed back and forth, on his heels, his greasy hair hanging out of his purple cap. His t-shirt was black and purple, with the FedEx logo on the breast pocket and the sleeve. I sighed and opened it.

‘Delivery for Samantha Clarke?’ he offered holding out a small package and a clipboard with a sheet for me to sign. I smiled and signed, taking the package, before stepping back inside, closing my door as Tony answered the phone.

‘Sam?’ he asked groggily. ‘It’s six a.m. What’s wrong?’ he asked through a yawn. I could hear Pepper groaning and mumbling something about telling me to ‘call back after the sun’s up’. I sighed and put down the package on my kitchen table, grabbing a knife to cut the tape and open it. I sighed, deciding to be perfectly honest with him.

‘I’m checking up on you guys. Alex threatened you all last night and I wanted to make sure that you were all ok.’ I told him, before adding an afterthought. ‘And tell Pepper the sun is already up.’ I cut the last piece of tape, and opened the box as there was a lot of shuffling on the other end of the line.

‘Wait, what?’ Tony asked, sounding more awake. I began removing layer after layer of paper.

‘The sun is up. It is still summer, and the sun rises earlier....’ I began, rambling a little, until Tony cut me off.
