‘Run!’ Samantha told us, her voice stronger, before she cried out, her body wracked with vigorous shakes.
Alexandra began taking slow, cautious steps back, towards us and the door, pulling Steve and Johnny with her. The others rustled around me, confused.
‘What’s happening?’ Tony asked. Alexandra looked flustered, scared, and began herding us towards the door.
‘That’s not Sam, that’s Alex, and there’s nothing I can...’ she stopped short, as Sam began laughing, a dark, haunting laugh which seemed to be a mix of her own voice, and that of the man who I now knew as Alex. I stepped inside, looking over at Sam, as she stood, her eyes completely black. She raised her arms, and I felt a wave of energy pass by us, ruffling Alexandra’s hair. She stiffened, seeming like she couldn’t move her arms, as Samantha kept eye-contact with her.
‘Run!’ Alexandra spat at us, and we wasted no time filing out of the room. Johnny stopped at the door, as we all ran on, rushing to reluctantly suit up. I ran past the others, to the far end of the hall, to a room which had been assigned to me as my sleeping quarters. I rushed inside and grabbed my sceptre, before rushing back out as I heard the familiar sound of Anthony’s suit firing.
We all ran back in seconds later, to see Anthony helping Alexandra to her feet. It wasn’t hard to see that not one of us was happy about this. Myself included. Samantha had convinced the others to give me a second chance. Without her, I would be slowly rotting and losing my mind in the Isle of Silence. I owed her more than just my life.
She groaned from the other side of the room, and pulled herself to her feet, stumbling a little. She took a step forward and looked up at Tony, her eyes still completely black. She moved to take another step forward, but stopped, her face contorting in pain. She fell to her knees, gasping for air. Steve made to run forward to her, but Clint grabbed him, stopping him. Samantha looked up at us, tears in her eyes, which had returned to their normal colour.
‘Kill me.’ she choked out, shocking us all. Nobody moved, or even breathed. Sam took a shaky breath, as her body was wracked with a wave of shakes again. She looked back up to us again, tears now streaming down her face.
‘Kill me now before Alex takes control, and makes me kill one of you.’ she screamed desperately at us, her voice breaking and cracking. Not one of us moved. We all saw the sense in her words, we all knew that it was probably the only option. She couldn’t fight off Alex forever, especially not in the state she was in. She needed help.
I pushed past the others, who seemed to be in a daze, and slowly walked towards Samantha. She shook her head vigorously, and tried to back away. But I persisted and knelt beside her. I concentrated, trying to shield her mind with my own, and reached out, placing my hand on her cheek. She took a sharp breath, before closing her eyes and sighing. I bowed my head, feeling a wave of fatigue wash over me, and looked down at Samantha, lifting her chin gently so she looked at me.
‘Samantha, you must not give up. Together, as a team, we are strong enough to beat Alex. You are not alone in this fight. Remember that. You cannot give up, because if you do, then Alex wins. So you will stay strong. If ever you feel weak, or like giving up, remember, you have eight pairs of shoulders to lean on. You are not alone in this.’ I told her, praying that she would see the truth in my words. She had shown me compassion, and so, I was returning the favour.
