Sam
I woke up, to the sound of Steve’s soft snoring. I turned to look at him, as he slept, looking at peace. Unlike how I currently felt; like I was about to crawl out of my own skin. It was funny, at times, we were the exact same, yet at others, we could be polar opposites. I smiled and kissed his forehead gently enough, so as not to wake him. He stirred slightly, before drifting back into his slumber, his soft snores resuming their regular pattern. I smiled at him, and got up, quickly and quietly throwing on a pair of jeans, and a tight black hoodie.
While everyone was doing an incredible job of relaxing, and trying to forget, there was an underlying current of stress and fear in all of us. Even though everyone but Tony was asleep, as usual, you could still feel the tension. I passed Tony, who was drinking coffee while reading something on his tablet in the kitchen. He looked up and raised his cup to me in silent greeting, and I waved back, offering him a small smile. He nodded towards the coffee pot, which was steaming with freshly-made coffee, offering me a mug, but I shook my head. I needed to de-stress, and if I had coffee, I’d fool myself into thinking that I had.
I walked into the elevator, silently stepping in and pressing the button for the floor. As the doors closed, and the elevator began moving, I rolled my shoulders, rubbing the back of my neck, and made my way down to the training room. I stepped inside, swinging my arms and jumping around a bit to warm up, the room cold after the cool night. I still wasn’t feeling great, and my side was still a tiny bit sore at times, but I needed to build up my resistance again. I used to be able to keep fighting back, but since I came back, I had stopped. I hadn’t meant to, but I had given up building, or even maintaining what I had.
And it wasn’t doing me any favours.
I sighed, and shook myself. The lights turned on in the room as JARVIS realised that I was in here, I guess that the delayed reaction was caused by Tony making him run something or another. I stretched lightly, before calling out to the AI.
‘Hey JARVIS? Could you please just throw random offences at me, but let’s keep it easy enough for the moment, if that’s alright?’ I asked, and the lights in the room dimmed, before the walls lit up red.
‘Of course, miss Clarke.’ he answered, and I swung my arms about.
‘And can we try to keep it quiet? Also, don’t tell the others that I’m down here.’ I asked and JARVIS quickly replied.
‘Partaking in some covert training, are we?’ JARVIS asked, and if I didn’t know better, I would say that I could almost hear a smile in his voice. I smiled to myself, looking up, around the room.
‘More like trying to stay sane.’ I answered, as the red lights flashed once, before staying on, signifying that the simulator was ready.
‘Always a good plan.’ JARVIS told me, a hint of sarcasm in his voice, and I grinned.
A whirring began to sound in the walls, before the assault started. I fought my way through everything that JARVIS threw at me; fireballs, flying daggers and flaming arrows, bullets, bombs, and battering rams, and every other imaginable weapon, for a half-hour. I dodged, punched, shot at, parried, blocked and fought past everything from miniature hurricanes, and simulated attackers. And while I was tired afterwards, I was surprised to find that I wasn’t as tired as I expected to be.
I thanked JARVIS, and made my way back upstairs, to find Tony and Pepper in the kitchen. They were talking and smiling as the elevator doors opened, but as soon as I stepped out, they stopped. They looked up at me sternly, and Tony folded his arms.
