The next day, I woke to find that Steve wasn’t beside me. I also found that, for the first time in weeks, I didn’t have messages from Nick waiting for me on my phone. I sat up and yawned, only to have delicious smells hit my senses. Like a siren call, it lifted me out of my bed and almost pulled me into the kitchen, where I saw Steve cooking, while humming along and dancing to forties music playing softly from JARVIS’ system.
I stopped, a smile playing on my lips, and leaned against one of the decorative pillars as I watched him. He picked up a frying pan and began flipping what looked like pancakes.
I smiled and walked over to the counter, sitting down on a stool, and putting my chin in my hands, watching him as he sang and danced, his back to me. He started singing a long, loud note, and turned around, jumping when he saw me. I couldn’t help but laugh at him, and he did the same, grinning at me. He stopped singing, but continued swaying to the music, grinning.
‘I was going to bring you breakfast in bed.’ he explained, trying to pout, but unable to wipe the smile from his face. I smiled up at him. Sometimes he was just too adorable.
‘No message from Fury today. Is everything alright?’ I asked him, looking around, and still not seeing the others. Steve smiled as he moved some bacon around in a frying pan.
‘They’re all gone out for the day. Fury called last night after we went to bed to say that we all have the day off. No idea why, but we’re all making the best of it.’ he said with a smile. ‘I thought we could just hang out for the day, watch a few movies. Unless, of course, there’s something that you’d like to do?’
I shook my head, smirking at him as he listened to his music, swaying along to it. He smiled back at me as toast popped in the toaster. I shook my head, listening to the big band playing in the background, and laughed a little.
‘I’ll make you a deal; you can pick the movies, if I can bring you up-to-date with music?’ I suggested, folding my arms and grinning at him. He looked up at me, his eyes sparkling mischievously. He looked like he was about to say something, but I held up my finger, not quite finished.
‘And you have to go into it with an open mind.’ I told him with a smile. He grinned at me, his eyes still full of mischief. We held eye-contact for a while, before he turned back to his cooking, laughing.
‘Deal.’ he said, and I grinned.
’60 years of music in one day...’ I mused to myself, pursing my lips. I thought about it for a second before grinning. ‘Yup.’ I told him, popping the ‘p’. ‘No problem.’
I hopped off my stool, and sprinted back into the bedroom, only to have Steve’s voice follow me as he called out after me, chastising me. ‘You shouldn’t be running!’ he said, trying to hold in his laughter as I returned, laptop in-hand. I quickly turned it on and searched ‘Best of the 50’s Music’ on Google, quickly finding a NME playlist.
I set it playing as Steve dished up eggs, bacon and toast, coming around to sit beside me. I picked up my fork and pointed at the screen, which he looked at in wonder.
‘I’m also going to spend the next few months catching you up on technology, but we’ll take that slower. This, will be a crash-course.’ I told him, kissing his cheek in thanks for the food. ‘Thanks.’ I said quickly, before setting an early Nina Simone song playing. I couldn’t help but dance in my seat as her voice rang from the speakers singing ‘My Baby Just Cares For Me.’
