‘Concentrate.’ Loki growled as a bead of sweat dripped down the back of my neck. I glared at him, fighting him off, before he pushed through my barriers and I fell to the ground out of sheer exhaustion.

‘I was concentrating.’ I growled back as I caught my breath. Loki walked up to me and hunkered down in front of me. He looked down at me as I sat back, blowing my hair out of my face.

‘No, you were not. How do I know that? I know that because you were thinking about how you could possibly stop Alex if he decided to break in here to kill everyone. How do I know that you were thinking that?’ he asked, his face hardening.

‘Because you weren’t concentrating!’ he growled at me, and I sighed, catching my breath.

I flicked my hair out of my face and looked up at the gallery of the training room. Even though the lights were off, leaving the glass to act as a mirror, I knew that the others were there, watching. I could almost feel their worrying. It was almost tangible in the air.

Three times they had asked me to take a break, and each time, I said no. I was not going to fall prey to Alex again, not if I could help it. I took a deep, steadying breath, and stood slowly. I closed my eyes, and cleared my mind of all thoughts.

‘Pick something small, something strong. Keep it in your mind and do not let it slip. If it slips, you fall. Alex gets access to your mind, and he gets control of your body.’ Loki commanded. In that moment, as with similar moments in our past few hours of training, I had glimpsed the true Loki. The Loki who could rule, who lived up to his name as brother of Thor. It was intriguing.

A faint buzz sounded before Steve’s voice sounded over the intercom. ‘Sam, you’ve been at this for hours. Please, just take a break. Even just five minutes!’ he begged. But I shook my head, keeping eye-contact with Loki, as I sifted through my mind to find something strong enough to keep Loki, and Alex, out of my head.

Eventually, I found a powerful memory, one of my favourites of Agent Mark Buress. When I was just fifteen, on my birthday, he had taken me down to his friend’s shop. His friend, Carl, had been teaching me about cars while Mark was at work. At the time, I had been tinkering around at the shop, trying to make a machine of perpetual motion, but none of my ideas were working. They led me to the back of the shop, where hanging from a chain, was a silver circle, inside of which, was yet another circle, and in the centre, lay a sphere, decorated like the hilt of a musketeer’s sword.

Carl set it in motion, and I watched in awe as it spun, and spun, and spun, glittering in the dim light. I watched it for hours, until finally, Mark pulled me away. But before we left, he took me aside, and placed the delicate chain around my neck, the pendant lying, as light as a feather, on my chest.

I brought myself back to the present, opening my eyes, and looked at Loki, nodding. The image of the spinning pendant, strong in my mind. Loki sighed, looking at me anxiously.

‘You are sure?’ he asked, looking reluctant. I nodded.

‘Last time for today.’ I assured him, keeping the picture spinning in my mind. Loki nodded and we both took a deep breath, preparing ourselves, before he began his onslaught.

A pressure formed around my mind, but the picture kept spinning, stuck in my mind. Loki frowned slightly, and the pressure increased, but it never broke through, it never turned to pain. Eventually, Loki stopped, and we both fell to the ground, exhausted. I rolled over, onto my back, laughing in exhilaration.
