Sam

Steve and I stayed up on the roof after everyone had left, not noticing the passing time. I sighed shakily, looking up at him. I put my hands on either side of his face and kissed his lips softly.

‘Don’t scare me like that again.’ I whispered against his lips. He sighed, his hands pulling me closer, into his warmth as I shivered slightly against the cool breeze. I looked down and shook my head.

‘When we lost contact... I...’ I trailed off and looked up at him. ‘What happened Steve?’ I asked him quietly. He sighed and rested his forehead against mine.

‘Loki got us out of a tight spot. That’s what happened.’ he told me with closed eyes.

He sighed shakily, and I watched as his eyes flitted about crazily behind his eyelids. I could tell that he wasn’t back there, but back in the war. I had known him long enough to know when his memories were taking over. I stood up on my tip-toes, pressing my forehead against his, and put my hands on his cheeks.

‘Hey. Steve. It’s ok. You’re here, with me. You’re safe.’ I shushed him softly, before starting to hum a quiet tune. We had both had our fair share of nightmares, and we both had developed a knowledge of how to pull the their back from their memories. I gently hummed, not even sure what I was humming, and slowly, but surely, I felt him come back to me.

He sighed shakily and pulled me closer. His forehead still rested on mine, and I wrapped my arms around his neck, letting him calm down in his own time. After a while, he sighed.

‘There were about fifty of them, Sam.’ he said quietly, keeping his eyes closed. He sighed again. ‘When the coms cut out...’ he shook his head slightly. ‘They just appeared out of nowhere... Something happened with the lights... They suddenly got really bright, and then they were all just there, standing between us and the others.’

I watched him warily. He looked so sad, so hurt. Even with his eyes closed, I could see it. I could feel it too.

‘We fought, but it wasn’t enough. I don’t know how, but they were so much stronger than us. I think we all accepted the end for a second...’ he said quietly. I didn’t say anything. How could I? I put my hand on his cheek, and gently rubbed my thumb over it, not sure what else I could do. Steve sighed again.

‘I know you saw the sudden respect and trust that we all have for Loki, but...’ he sighed again, tightened up the slack in his arms, holding me close again, and opened his eyes.

‘Sam, you were right. You were right to go against us and trust him. He... He saved us all in there. And we’d be dead without him. We owe him more apologies than we can voice.’ he said quietly. He took my hand from his cheek and held it tight, pulling it against his chest. I couldn’t find any words to say, so I didn’t say any. He sighed again.

‘I know the others will be explaining this to Fury...’ he sighed again, running his thumb over my knuckles.

‘When the lights blew out... once they faded, they were filling the warehouse. Tony saw Alex with the detonator in his hand, so he blew it to pieces before Alex got the chance to even think about detonating.’ he looked up at me, his eyes soft.

‘But that distracted us all. I don’t know why, but it did. Next thing we knew, we were all separated, Loki was nowhere to be seen, Tony’s reactor had been torn from his suit... we were all in bad shape.’ I felt tears begin to well up in my eyes, and I put my free hand on his cheek.
