I stayed on the floor, giving myself a few seconds to gather myself. My side was filled with a burning pain. My blood felt like it had turned to acid. My head felt like someone had put my brain through a blender. The sunlight was streaming in stronger through my window. I held my hand up, blocking its path to my sensitive eyes. I breathed slowly, and grabbed onto the nearest thing to me; a chair.

Pulling myself to my feet, I reached across the table, and grabbed my phone. I stood up straight, once it was in-hand, only to fall, and stumble into the wall. This whole ‘fighting-off-Alex’ thing was really beginning to take its toll on me. Not that it hadn’t already. I could feel my energy being sapped by the simplest things; like breathing. I felt an ache in my bones which no number of painkillers, or amount of rest would ever get rid of. I was dying, slowly, excruciatingly, but it was an unfortunate truth. No-one can keep going forever. Especially not with road-blocks a mile high in their way.

I steadied myself, bracing my back against the wall. I took a few deep breaths, steadying myself. I steeled my mind against the pain, blocking it out until I could breath slightly easier. It still, hurt, a lot, but I could function around it. I closed my eyes, calming my erratic heart, before opening them, and with shaking hands, I called Nick. The phone rang once, twice, and in the middle of the third ring, he picked up.

‘Agent Clarke.’ he greeted coolly. I held the phone away from me as I gasped, my side burning with pain. I brought the phone back to my ear, and spoke quickly and urgently to Nick.

‘Nick, have you seen Lexi or Johnny? And please tell me that you have.’ I asked him, closing my eyes as I felt sick, with both pain and dread. Nick coughed obnoxiously on the other end of the line.

‘No, I haven’t. Agent Clarke, what in the hell is going on? I don’t have time to deal with people who abandon us in our time of need.’ he snapped, annunciating each word. I sighed shakily, my body beginning to shake as the pain built, the buzzing returning to my head.

‘Nick, please. I need you to...’ I began, my voice strained as I tried, and failed, to once more block out the ever-increasing intense pain.

‘No, I need you to explain why you’re suddenly all gung-ho for coming back. And why do you sound like someone is stabbing you?’ he asked with sass. I rolled my eyes and pinched the bridge of my nose.

‘Nick, I think Lexi and Johnny are being held by RHOKA. I got a package this morning which held Lexi’s gun, badge and id, as well as Johnny’s badge too.’ There was a scuffle on the other end of the line, and the pain in my side grew. I was pretty sure that it was infected at this stage.

The sunlight began to get brighter, streaming through my window and filtering into my kitchen. I squinted against it, my eyes sensitive to its brightness. The buzzing in my head though, was thankfully, slowly dying.

‘Agent Clarke?’ Nick called, returning to the phone. I straightened up, noticing the strain in his voice.

‘What is it?’ I asked, dreading what I was sure was to come.

‘RHOKA just sent a video threat. They have Lexi and Johnny.’ he said monotonously. I pinched the bridge of my nose and breathed slowly.

‘I’m on my way in, Nick. The others are too. I’ll be there soon.’
