Chapter 11: Xania Ayden

Aria’s annoying shrilly alarm shattered my blissful sleep at six in the morning.

Wait. Aria’s alarm? I was supposed to be in Xavier’s room.

“Switch off that damn thing!” I groaned and opened my eyes. Yup, definitely in my room. And Aria was struggling to switch off her alarm with her outstretched arm.

“Umm... Aria, what day is it?” I asked my petite roommate. She cleared her throat to test her morning voice before saying, “Saturday. Sorry, I forgot to switch off the alarm for weekends.”

Hmm... So it was Saturday. Which meant I certainly hadn’t forgotten a whole day since I went to Xavier’s room. Or maybe it had been a week since then? No... no... don’t be ridiculous!

“Wondering how you came here, Xan?” Aria asked me, eyeing me as if I was a dead specimen under observation.

“Yeah... I was supposed to be with my brother. Did I sleep walk here?” I started fretting.

Aria smirked and shook her head. Then she told me, “You fell asleep in Xav’s room last night. Daemon said that he didn’t want to wake you up so he got you here last night.”

“You mean he...”

“Carried you all the way to this room,” Aria confirmed. Despite my horror, a blush crept up my cheeks and I looked away to hide it from Aria.

“This is new,” I breathed.

“Before you get indulged in fantasies that he likes you, let me tell you what he said before leaving,” Aria interrupted.

“What did he say?”

“He said ‘I bet she was sent to this boarding school because she ate all the kids at her school. She weighs more than a whale’.”

“That jerk!” I grumbled. “What does he think he is?”

Adrianna, Samara, Aria and I were sitting in the main hall, having breakfast while our principal made some announcements which were as important as mosquito larvae.

“Don’t the teachers ever eat?” I asked my friends as I dug into my French toast.

“Well, according to the Alsandroz legend, they don’t,” Aria informed me.

“What do you mean by according to the Alsandroz lengend?” I asked, mimicking her tone.

“Apparently this academy has some rumors as legends,” Samara told me.

“Like they say that leaving this academy without the headmistress’s permission is not possible. If you are able to somehow sneak out of the school you would keep on ending up in front of the building,” Adrianna narrated.

“That’s not a rumor,” I whispered.

“How do you know? You tried to escape?” Aria asked me.

“Yes. And that same thing happened with me,” I answered.

“Did you try using a compass?” Samara prodded. “According to the legend, even if you follow a particular direction using the compass, you’d still end up in front of the academy.”

“I know, I tried. It’s true. It happened,” I confirmed.

“Xania, you aren’t kidding, are you?” Aria asked me seriously.

“Why do you think I have that cleaning staff punishment?” I asked as an answer to her question.

“Hey gals, what’s going on?” Daemon asked as he and Xavier joined us.

“Who do you think you are, jerk?” I asked because of the anger triggered in me by his comment last night. I wanted to slap him but my tone was bittersweet.

“After lifting you last night, I surely think Superman,” he smiled viciously.

“No one asked you to carry me,” I pointed out level headedly.

“Well, no one asked you to sleep on my bed,” he retorted.

“You snuck into each other’s room?” Samara asked us, interrupting our argument.

“My brother’s room!” I pointed out before she could jump to conclusions.

“Can we forget about it?” Xavier interrupted.

“Sure,” Daemon shrugged and started a conversation with Aria who was sitting next to him.

“Chill,” Adrianna whispered to me. “Daemon is a sweet guy.”

“Uh huh?” I challenged her. She deadpanned and said, “He is my best friend and I know him like the back of my hand. He is just uncomfortable around new people. That’s all. He’ll get used to you. Really.”

“Okay...,” I dropped it. Then I remembered, “Riana, that silly dare Percy got? To go in the middle of the jungle and stuff... That’s a campus legend too?”

“Yeah... A freaky one,” Adrianna whispered. “Let’s talk about something else. I don’t want to remember about that.”

“Is it true that people usually don’t return from that place?” I asked.

“Yeah... Now change the topic,” she demanded.

“I actually talked with Daemon last night without shouting at him,” I smiled at Adrianna.

“You kidding?” she asked, smiling back at me.
