Max's POV

I woke up around five am, before the sun started to rise and went to check on Welles after his surgery last night. It should've ended a few hours ago, so he was probably still asleep. I walked into the medical center, going down the hall to where Welles was staying, I opened the door and saw the room clean as a whistle. I paused, seeing that there was no trace of life here. I even double checked the room number to see if it was really Welles' room. I then check all of the rooms, all of them were identical. I then search for Marshall in the two places he was always at- the library and his office. Both were empty.

It was around six now, people were starting to roam the streets, getting their food and socializing. I went to my room where michonne and Andrea still were, sleeping. I opened the door and saw michonne getting ready to leave the room, Andrea was doing her makeup. I paused at the sight as she applied mascara to her eyelashes in front of the mirror. A few days ago she was just telling us to kill her and now she's doing her makeup-

"What the hell are you doing?" I asked her, she looked up at me, oblivious of what I was talking about

"We're in the apocalypse- we're literally surrounded by millions of flesh eating monsters and you're making yourself pretty?" I exclaimed, she returned to her eyes when she realized I was complaining

"What? Can I have some joy in this shit world..." She says silently, she keeps doing her makeup. Michonne was about to leave

"Where are you going?"

"I don't ask you where you go, so don't ask me." She says coldly, she reached for the knob but I pushed the door shut when it opened a little. I looked at michonne, she glared at me

"I need to know where Marshall is, him and the governor are gone." I say

"He went to go find the soldier's unit a few hours ago." I hear Andrea say behind me, I turned around to see her sprucing her hair up, she looked at me, I was giving her a dirty look knowing she was doing this for the governor.

"Stop looking at me like that, at least he's my age." She jokes, I stammer on my words- unable to comprehend that she just said that to me. She walked out. Michonne stood there, straight faced

"Keep your gun on you... And keep it hidden." She says, she then leaves. I stood there, thinking where Marshall could be, I then hear a large vehicle pull up below the building. I went to the window and saw a few military vehicles roll into the town. I go down to the street, everyone was surrounding them. I was expecting to see soldiers pop out of them but instead the governor and his people did. He came out, looking solemn

"We went to our newest addition's base, Welles. Welles requested that we bring his unit back here. We found his unit dead... Wiped out by the lurkers." He says to the town. Everyone was silent, I watched his every move, sensing that he was lying.

"Welles passed away last night from surgery. We owe it to him and ourselves that we find the medical supplies we need to keep this community alive and thriving. Another new addition to Woodbury... A young girl named Max... Max was in her second year of medical school, she was going to become a surgeon. She needs to be taught so we can have a team of medical staff here..." I felt people's eyes on me, he then looked at me and smiled. A man gave the governor a glass of something, he took it and raised it up,

"So, let's toast to the future of Woodbury. In honor of Welles and his unit who did not make it." He says, just then, everyone raised their cups of various liquids and toasted. When the governors show was over, he started to walk away to his house, I followed him.

"Where's Marshall? And what happened to Welles?" I asked, he turned back at me, he didn't look surprised

"Welles died because he bled out, Marshall should've been in one of the vehicles."

He kept walking, I watched him as he seemed a totally different man than what he was in front of the whole town. He seemed careless and cold, almost dangerous. He opened the door and went in. I turned around to find Marshall, I wanted to see specifically what happened and why he didn't try to get my help.

Marshall was walking out of the vehicle and looked as solemn as all of the men did. Something horrible must have gone down back at the base, and I have a feeling the governor was behind it.

"Marshall, why didn't you tell me?" I asked

He looked up at me,

"He bled out too quickly, it was too late."

He kept walking, I ran up to him,

"Where did you put him?"

He looked nervous when I asked him that, he then snapped at me

"Aren't you supposed to be reading?! I told you to read chapters two through five!" He yelled, I was set back, not expecting that.

"Aren't we supposed to keep the body for examination- for- for an autopsy?!"

"I already know how he died, max- I was performing the surgery!" He yelled. He walked away, thinking he was done with the conversation when I yelled back,

"I don't believe you."

He stopped, he looked back at me. He rushed over to me, he was face to face with me, his eyes looked menacing. I couldn't feel anything but my fear coursing through my veins but I didn't dare stand back

"You are nothing compared to me. I am a surgeon. I have been a surgeon for twenty years- I've performed thousands of surgeries, most of them being successful. You are a second year med student- learning how the kidneys work- you do not have the right to call me a liar. You wouldn't know what to do if you were standing in front of that bleeding man. So, if you wish for anymore of my help, I suggest you shut your mouth and keep quiet.

He walks away, I see michonne looking at me from afar. I walk away.
