"Get out of store you scoundrel!" The short, slightly aletude man yelled.
I had been caught. For the first time in my life on the streets, I had been caught stealing. My mother was dying, and we needed to get medicine for her. My brothers and sisters - the ones that knew anyway - were trying to find a way to get what we needed also, but we simply couldn't afford it. So I resorted to stealing, again.
Mother hated it when I stole, so did my brothers and sisters, and so did I. It was only when completely necessary that I stole and with mother on her deathbed it was certainly the right time.
"I said, get out!" He repeated himself and even louder. "I won't hesitate to call the guards on you boy!"
"But sir, my mother... she - she's dying... I really need this medicine." I pleaded. "My brothers and sisters and I - well we would be orphans... I can't do that do that to them." I wiped my eyes as tears began to fall.
A look of sympathy took over the man's face and I hoped and prayed that he would cave and let me take the small glass bottle of medicine.
"I - take the medicine and get out or I will call the guards on you boy." he sighed and waved me off.
I quickly thanked him before darting out of the shop and out of the town square down the narrow cobbled roads towards the outskirts of town.

The sun was much lower when I reached the small shack my family of eleven lived in. There was me, mother, father, my four sisters and three other brothers.
"Father!" I shouted as I burst through the door. "I - I got the medicine." I panted out.
"How...?" He asked amazed and took the small bottle from me.
"The alchemist let me keep it. He caught me stealing it and I told him about mother and let me keep it." I told him.
"That's complete and utter fadoodle." he shook his head.
"No father, it's true." I said.
"Just - go play with your siblings." he sighed and walked to his and mother's room.
"We heard what you did for mother." Thea - the oldest Hemmings child - commented as I took a seat beside her.
"Yeah." I mumbled.
"You did good. I don't agree with you stealing stuff from town but you did good." She continued.
I simply nodded and rested my head on her shoulder.
"Lukey!" Laurence exclaimed.
"Hey Laurence." I smiled at him as he took a seat on my lap.
Laurence was the youngest of us. He was five and had the sweetest, most kindest heart you could find.
"Is mother gonna be okay?" He asked.
"I hope so, I really hope so."

A day had passed and mother was already doing a little better. She didn't look so pale, dead even. I remember watching Jack - he was the oldest - with the exact same sickness as he died slowly. Everyone mourned for him, everyone knew him and so everyone was there. Well everyone who wasn't a royal.
"Luke!" Thea yelled.
I got up off the straw bed and went over to her.
"Can you please go into town and get me some vegetables, Alec earned some bits yesterday." she told me.
"Okay." I nodded.
"Bits are on the table."
I grabbed the silver bits and placed them in my pocket before making my way into town. I would have ridden Sparrow (our horse) but father was busy working her in the fields ploughing and sowing seeds for growing.
And so I made my way back into town and towards the markets. There were a sorts of stalls there, the baker had one, the blacksmith and even a few of the other poor people who live near me had one.
I hadn't even made it to a stall when a troop of eight guards marched in surrounding a shorter figure, the prince maybe. A crate was placed in front of him and he stood up on it. It was prince Ashton.
"Hello everyone, I welcome you all to the palace on the full moon of this month for a ball. I will be trying to find a bride," He muttered something else that no one heard before continuing, "again, everyone is welcome." He finished and with that the guards escorted him out.
My mouth hung open, much like everyone else's, and I quickly bought the food my family would need and would last at least a week. I ran home as fast as possible and burst through the door.
"There's - there's a ball." I wheezed. "The prince, he's holding a ball to find his bride and everyone is welcome."
"When is it?" Alec asked.
"The full moon of this month." I told him.
"We're going. All of us." He said. "There's bound to be food and I want everyone fed."
I nodded. Alec had always been like a second father to all of us and if there was a chance that we could be well fed for even the smallest time, he would take it.
I just hoped at least one of is could find someone there. Maybe not prince Ashton, but someone.
