I had left Sparrow a the river where I was staying after being kicked out while I went into town after sunrise. With a leather pouch slung over my shoulder, I made my way down the cobbled streets towards the market square.
As I walked through groups of early morning shoppers and traders, I would pick up an apple here and a bread roll there and stash them in the leather pouch. No one suspected a thing. That's how my morning went until the sun reached it's peak in the sky, that's when it all turned to custard.
A trader was frantically speaking to one of the guards and pointing at me. With a gasp I realised I had been caught. I took off at a run to attempt to get away but it was no use, the guards had horses and caught up to me easily.
"Whatcha got there boy?" One of them asked sternly, he didn't need to as he already knew; stolen goods. He had raven coloured hair and deep, dark brown eyes.
I let out a cough and repelled with, "My morning shopping." Although the guards knew I had stolen I was still going to try and lie my way out of it.
"Oh yeah? Then where is the left over bits?" The guard sneered.
When I came up with no reply he snatched the pouch from me and slit the bottom, allowing everything I had stolen to tumble to the streets.
"No bits here." The guard shook his head. "For stealing you will spend some time in the dungeons."
A different guard yanked my hands behind my back and tied them together tightly with a length of rope.
"You are coming with us swine." The first guard snapped and yanked me forward.
On the way to the dungeons I was dragged along some of the busiest streets, they were lined with people who whispered and pointed at me. From the snippets of hushed conversations that I heard, they were making up stories about why I was being taken. Some said it was because I murdered someone, others that I stole.
We reached the dungeons and I was tugged down the stairs once the lead guard had gotten off his horse and dismissed the other guards. He threw me into a cell after he had unlocked it.
"This would not be the first time the I have thrown you in here now is it?" The guard jeered.
I did not answer and the guard certainly did not like that. So he liked me, and he kicked me hard. His boot covered foot collided with my stomach and I was sent sprawling across the damp stone floor. The air in my lungs left with a puff and I coughed and wheezed as I struggled to get my breath back in this stale air.
"Now, is this or is this not your first time in these cells!?" The guard demanded.
"It is the second." I coughed out.
An evil glint flashed in his brown eyes as he stalked towards me with a bulky set of keys twirling around his finger. With my arms still bound behind my back, he yanked me to my feet. I winced in pain as the rope was rubbing and far too tight around my wrists. He cut the rope and shoved me harshly to the floor near the wall. My hands were bound again but this time with thick metal cuffs and chained to the wall behind me.
With another harsh kick to my shins, the guard left after locking the cell behind me.
"Are you okay?" A quiet voice called out from the darkness.
"Y-yeah." I stuttered. "Who are you?" I called out to the person, their voice sounded feminine so I assumed that they were a girl.
"I'm Faye. Who are you newbie?" Faye asked.
"My name is Lucifer..." I replied and choked on a quiet sob. For the first time since I was disowned I felt bad about it. "But I prefer Luke."
"Okay then Luke, what did you do to get yourself locked up down 'ere?" she asked.
"I stole stuff from the markets." I told her guiltily. "What did you do?"
"I got caught hunting." she said and the sound of boots scuffing on the floor was heard until a face poked through the bars and into a small shaft of light next to me. "It wasn't the first time I hunted either. But they had those damn blood hounds with them and they caught me."
Faye was rather pretty, her hair was a tousled and knotty mat of red, her eyes were a mysterious, glimmering forest green colour with freckles sprinkled across her pale cheeks like colourful sprinkles that bakers used to decorate the cakes.
"What are you staring at Luke?" Faye asked.
"Wha- oh nothing." I stumbled over my words and looked down at the damp floor with a blush.
There was a brief period of silence before I broke it by asking the girl a question, "Do they feed us down here?"
"Mhm." she nodded. "Once a day as it's a rubbish half a stale loaf of bread and barely even a drop of water."
"Can they even do that?" I was shocked, sure last time I stayed in these dungeons was bad but I didn't even stay a day, mother had sent Alec to bail me out as soon she heard.
"Of course they can." Faye scoffed. "The king doesn't care what happens to anyone who commits a crime, he just wants us lot off the streets!" She takes a deep breath and calms down a bit, "What do you think will happen once the prince becomes king?" Her voice was soft as she spoke.
"I have no idea... I honestly have no idea.."
