A kiss is a lovely trick designed by nature to stop speech when words become superfluous. ~Ingrid Bergman
Ashton's POV
I opened my eyes, the light blinding and the pain in my arm present. I rubbed my eyes with my right hand and waited for a moment.
"Luke.." I went wide eyed when I remembered the previous day's occurrences.
I stood up and looked at my wrapped up, hung up in a cotton sling before walking down the hallway.
"Prince Ashton, what are you doing up?" Someone asked me but I kept down the path as I reached the door of the catacombs.
"What are you doing?" Leona's spoke behind me.
"Going to fetch Luke." I said. My voice was firm against Leona's cold demeanor.
"No." Leona smiled. I felt my blood begin to boil. "You traded him to a place almost worse than dungeons."
"Let me in there!" I snapped. "I must see him, Leona, you can not stop me. You have no power here. I wish to see my beloved!"
"Your beloved.." Leona scoffed. "He won't love you after what you have done!" Leona paused. "After we wed, Ashton, I will succumb to our deal and you may frolic with Lucifer however you please. Until then, I will not allow anyone to interfere with my plan. Do know, I would kill myself before betraying my own word. Do you understand, Ashton?"
Before I could open my mouth, Leona grabbed my arm and squeezed the wound, her nails digging into the flesh. I remembered blood-curdling screams and my vision fading to black as I passed out in pain.
Then I woke a second time. Still lying on the floor, did not one soul see me here? And did Leona leave? No one heard me either? I thought it was odd as I sat up, I looked around me and then opened the door to the catacombs.
Walking down, the room was dark, barely lit by the sconces along the stone walls. I looked and could see Luke sitting in the middle of the room, his head hung low and I could only assume he was asleep. On the contrary, Luke raised his head to me with an intense glare. I took a deep breath, taking the knife from my pocket and cutting him loose.
The first action Luke took was slapping my the knife from my hand and throwing me to the ground. "W-What are you doing!?"
"What am I doing!? What are you doing!?" Luke hissed. "You sent me down here! You betrayed me and my trust!" I was wide eyed, Luke had valid points. "You have no idea what it is like to be my position! I'm a personal prisoner to the King! I cannot leave the castle, and I cannot leave this room! Because of you and your idiotic manner! Trusting people with little to no care, everything is useless when you think something else may hold more meaning."
"C-Calm down, Lucifer!" I hissed at him as I began to pull myself off the floor. Luke's breath hitched as he glared down at me. I could swear I saw him twitching as he stood over me. He crouched over me and his eyes dark.
"I wish I never met you.." He snarled and I went wide eyed, as his hands wrapped around my throat and pinned me to the ground. "If Leona wants your land so bad, then she can take it!"
"L..Lu.." I tried to choke out. I was trying to use my one good arm to push him off, but nothing was stopping him.
"If you say that I can leave, then I will let go." Luke snarled. I nodded my head the best I could and Luke released my throat, leaving me to cough and hack up anything and everything as he glared down at me. I used my foot to kick him back and Luke immediately screamed as he came into contact with the floor. I went wide eyed as I moved towards him. He was lying on his stomach and then I finally thought about the bandages wrapping around his torso.
I found myself sitting back, wondering what to do. I saw the blade across the room and stood, grabbing it and walking back over to where Luke was. He was sitting up now, rubbing his eyes when he saw me. "What are you doing..?" I crouched on my knees and held the knife out for Luke. "I-I do not.. I do not understand.."
"I told you before, and I shall be willing to tell you once more." I said. "I would rather die than live without you beside me." I set the knife on the ground and backed up. Bowing my head. "If you are willing to kill me, you may leave on your own."
"Ashton that is legitimately insane." Luke muttered. "It would be murder, and I would never escape anyways."
"If you are going to leave, than I wish for nothing else in this world but to die." I said. I closed my eyes and waited for some sort of pain to come, but nothing came.
"Get up." I opened my eyes and raised my head to see Luke standing. "I am the peasant, not you, if anything I should beg to die by your hand." Luke extended a hand down to me and I grabbed it, letting him pull me up. Luke's eyes drifted off to the side for a moment. "Why did you marry Leona?"
"I have yet to do so." I spoke. "Luke, I feel as if I have very limited options. And when I do, she follows through with her word."
"How do you know this?" Luke asked. "How do you know she will not betray you in the end?"
"Leona would not." I sighed. "Despite her deceiving ways, she has never told a lie. I have known her for a long time, Luke."
Luke did not look like he believed me, but before he could respond I could hear someone clapping from the stairs. In a ruby colored dress appeared Leona, she smiled and she was as pretty as a painting, but her eyes were always dead.
"Ashton, I thought I told you to return to your room?" Leona sighed. "And I now come to see that you are down here with Lucifer? You two really are meant to be."
"Leona, please do not do anything rash." I said quietly as I placed Luke behind me.
"I shall not." Leona smiled. "Your mother forbids it, at the end of the day, she is the one with power. Not me, if she found out I did wrong to you or maybe even Lucifer, well she would hang me for crowds to admire. My father would permit it, as well."
"You are not angered?" I asked.
"I am saddened that you would not heed to my word, Ashton." Leona smiled. "In fact, I proposed my plan to your mother. Which she sorrowfully agreed would be best. In the meantime, we must keep your actions from being rash. She has agreed for guards to keep you in your room."
"W-What..Sh-She would never.." I shook my head furiously.
"She did, she also believes you should rest yourself before marriage." Leona smiled. "How does your arm feel?" I shot her a heavy glare as she dared to taunt me. "Guards will now escort you to your room. Although, I shall be generous."
"How so?" I snarled.
"I am allowing Lucifer to accompany you, as I will guarantee that no one shall harm your beloved." Leona said. Behind her came guards, not one was Calum. Although, Michael stood in front of them.
"Come with me, boys." Michael said, there was no tone of regret to him. Either he was better at hiding it than I have come to know, or maybe Michael felt no pity for me. Maybe he agreed with Leona too. So I walked through the castle with Luke at my side, and there we were shut behind the doors of my bedroom.
The time passed, and Luke was lying on my bed. Trying to decipher a book he had picked up. He said he could read it, but I doubted him. Instead, I stood at the balcony. Wondering if I jumped if I would pass with my father.
I found myself climbing on the other side of the railing so my feet were dangling over, and I could feel the whip of wind through my hair. My bottom sitting just on the very edge. I found myself pondering everything. The choices I made, the lives I ruined, the lives I ended. Would I even be fit to be king in the end? While Leona would give me right to help my people, am I even worthy of it? I might have slid off the edge, but was paused when I heard a voice speak to me.
"A-Ashton..? What are you doing?" Luke spoke behind me, but I dared not to move.
