Ashton led me from the ballroom and into a fairly spacious circular room with stairs that wound their way up the walls.
"Come with me, the party is getting to be a bore." He said and started up the stairs. So I followed.
"Where are we?" I called to him as he was further up the stairs. My voice echoed through the room and bounced the question back and forth."We, Luke, are in the upper East facing tower." He replied and continued on up. We ran up the stairs in silence for the rest of the way. Both of us were out of breath and panting. Ashton motioned for me to go with him through a door to the left of us.
"This is not the top of the tower as you can see." He gestured to the stairs that still went up. "But, we will be going to a higher tower and I do say, the view is impeccable."
"I will have to take your word for it, Prince Ashton." I smirked.
"Oh shush, Lucifer, you know to not call me that. You are a friend, you don't have to address me with my title." Ashton scolded.
"I know that. I just enjoy making you squirm." I chuckled as we stepped through the door and onto a bridge that seemed to lead to the base of another tower.
"Of course you do, I do not blame you though. Griffon despises being addressed with his title even more than I." He chuckled with me.
I simply smiled as we walked. The air around us was cool compared to warmth inside the palace and the gentle breeze caused our coats to blow in the wind. I sucked in a deep breath of air and gently let it out.
"Are you okay Luke?" Ashton asked.
"Mhm." I nodded and refrained from looking down.
"You are frightened of heights." He realized. "I apologize, but we are almost there." He reassured me.
"Okay." I breathed and he began to walk backwards across the bridge. "Do not do that! You could trip." I exclaimed and forced him to turn around again.
We finally made it into the tower and I let out a shakes breath. Ashton looked apologetic as he placed a hand on my shoulder. "I am very sorry for making you do that." He spoke softly.
"I am fine Ashton. I just have never been this high up." I replied.
"Only if you are sure." He said. "Do you want to go up?" He clearly did not want to push me to go up the stairs. I nodded and we made our way up the staircase.
The stairs were steeper and the trek up the stairs took much longer than the previous ones. But the burning sensation in my legs and the breathlessness once we reached the top was worth it. You could see the whole township from up there. Guests were still making their way to the palace as we stood leaning against the barrier watching everything below us move by.
"Luke?" Ashton spoke up.
"Hm?" I turned to him.
"What do you think mother would say if I told her that I want to marry a man?" He asked. His hazel eyes were brimming with tears and he looked frightened.
"I do not know, Ashton, I do not know." I sighed. He nodded.
"Leona proposed a deal to me you know." He said absentmindedly. "She said that if I pretend to marry her and we combined our kingdoms she would let me marry you-"
"You wish to marry me?" I asked.
"Is that all you took from that?" Ashton asked.
"No, that is not all I took from it." I scoffed. "But I do not think you should take her deal. I sense that she has other motives than to just combine your kingdoms." I said softly in case there were knights about.
"As do I, it did seem all too good to be true after all." He replied.
"Why would you wish to marry me? I am nothing but a thief." I asked.
He looked thoughtful for a while. "Because you care." My eyebrows rose. "You cared enough about Faye to make me release her too. You have been in those cells, I want to reform them and make this kingdom better off for everyone and you could help me do that." He said.
"Marriage is for those who love each other." I countered.
"And I love you." Ashton said.
My jaw dropped and my eyes widened. "No, you can not love me." I said frantically.
"Luke, calm down." He said softly with a soothing hand on my shoulder. "Now, why can I not love you?"
"I am a peasant with nothing left, you are a prince with everything and no one would agree with you marrying me." I replied sadly.
"First off, father was a peasant. Second, I do not care what people think, mother said to marry who I wanted. So I will." Ashton said firmly. "If you are okay with it of course." He added quickly.
Tears welled up in my eyes and I flung my arms around him and buried my face in his neck. "I would love to marry you Ashton. You are the only person who has cared so much about me to do this for me." I sobbed. "I would do anything for those I love and I love you."
He said and placed a kiss on my cheek. "I love you too." I murmured into his neck.
"Now, shall we go join this party? Mother will wonder where I am." He chuckled and linked our arms together. I had never felt so wanted in my life.
