L U K E

As the room came into vision, the sound of dripping in my ears and the blood rushing to my head. The heavy breaths leaving my dry mouth, each shakily falling out. My palms shook as they covered themselves in sweat, and besides the water or the pounding of my heart in my ears, I could hear arguing outside the door. The voices sounded like they could only belong to Leona and Ashton, my lover.

I was still hurt by him sending me down here. He had sent a troop of palace guards to hunt me down before I could leave the castle and they brought me here. But not without a fight. The whole way to the ballroom and then onto the throne room, I kicked out at them and screamed until my voice grew hoarse and my throat burned. Although the guards were stronger than me and had armour on, I still clawed at the eyeholes in their helmets in an attempt to get them to let me go.

We had passed through the throne room and the guards were told to stop by the king himself. I was in a fear filled daze when he reached for the hilt of a dagger which was fastened to his belt. My heart stopped in fear, I had thought that it was the end of my days. But before the king could strike out with the blade, Ashton's own one was plunged into his father's stomach. Bile rushed up my throat but I screamed all the same as blood splattered my face. My scream was cut short by a blow to the back of my head and that was all I could recall before my time down here.

"Let me in there!" The voice who I was certain belonged to my lover yelled. "I must see him, Leona, you can not stop me. You have no power here." I could not hear her reply as it was muffled by the large wooden door but as the door swung open moments later to reveal Leona standing alone.

"Hello, Lucifer. How is it down here for you?" She sneered. I simply spat on her sparkling slippers as she stood over me. "Now now, that's no way to treat a princess is it?" She asked and forced me to look up at her with a sharp and well manicured finger.

I simply glared in reply and turned away. "I would have thought that you would treat someone with such power over you with more respect." She tutted.

"Why should I?" I scoffed. "You do not care for anyone but yourself Leona. I would have thought that even Ashton would befriend someone nicer at a young age. But it appears not." I glared at her and if looks could kill, she would be joining past kings and queens in her own catacombs.

"Do not test me Lucifer. I would have your head on a stake for the buzzards to peck away at if Ashton had not already taken my deal." She hissed.

"He did not... He simply could not have..." I whispered. "You are lying!" I screamed at her. I broke down in tears as the hurt and pain of the past day or so eventually caught up in a wave of emotion. I couldn't handle it.

Ashton was right, I am not cut out for this life. I do not have the manners nor the intelligence to assist him in the ruling of a kingdom. I wanted out. Out of these caves. Out of the castle and out of this kingdom.

Maybe I could have gotten Leona to let me out if I had promised to leave and never return. But I doubted that she would ever agree. I doubted that she would even allow me to have a meal while I was down there.

"Think, Lucifer, I am a princess and you? Well you will be dead no matter what." Leona had a crazed glint in her eye.

"You will never get away with this!" I shouted at her.

"Ah ah ah, remember, I am the one who has power between us. You, do not. I could have the entirety of the palace guards all with bows ready to shoot, and the will. I have them wrapped around my finger Lucifer. Think about that over the next few days, hm?" She was taunting me. Waiting for me to snap. But I would not give in. Not even when she pulled out a small, precisely carved handle. My eyes widened as I stared at the knife in her hand.

"What should I start with?" She thought for a moment before pushing me to the floor and slicing open the back of my shirt. "How about here." She dug the tip of the blade into my upper back and slowly began to drag it downwards. "You see Lucifer, this is what happens to those who stand in my way." As she cut more and more marks into my back the catacombs began to fade into darkness before I completely lost consciousness.

A stinging sensation in my back is what awakened me for the second time. I began to stir and tried to sit up but a hand on my shoulder pushed me back down. "Calm down, I am trying to clean the cuts. Do not make this harder." A voice I vaguely recognised said.

"Who a-are you?" I asked them since I could not turn over.

"I am Michael, I was the King's advisor and now Ashton and Leona's." He replied.

"Ashton and Leona?" I asked. Tears pooled in my eyes and flowed down my cheeks, but not from the stinging in my back but the stinging in my heart. "Th-they married?"

"I am afraid so." Michael replied. A soft cloth was tightly bound around my back before I was allowed to sit up. Michael had hair of a similar colour to my own but a little darker. His eyes were and emerald green and his skin pale. "I do not trust that girl, I know she was who did this to you. I also know that she was the one who suggested that Ashton marry your sister Lucinda." He said.

"Why does she want me dead?" I sobbed. "I do not believe I did anything to her." The tears were relentless and as I tried to stop them, I simply cried more.

"Because you got in her way. Even when she and ashton were young she was possessive. She would not let Ashton play with other princesses and eventually princes too. That is why his only friends from outside the kingdom are Griffon and Leona herself. I do not think even the Queen likes her all that much." He took a breath. "Leona has corrupted the royal guard here. That is why sir Calum beat you while you were in the dungeons and why you were treated so terribly. She knew you were in her way." He said.

"So if I just leave then... Then Ashton will be safe?" I asked through my tears.

Michael shook his head. "No one is safe in Leona's presence." He said. "And I could not help to free you, for we would be caught instantly. She has doubled the guards and you would be murdered on sight." He sighed. "I wish I could help to free you Luke, you seem right for Ashton even though you are a man and not a woman. Do not give up on him my boy, he will find a way."

He will find a way...

"I must go now. Rest well Luke." With a soft smile, Michael was gone and I was alone in the catacombs once more. I had to get out. I did not know how, but I would... Someday, somehow.
