L U K E

Ashton and I walked down the streets of Solaris together. It had been thirteen years since we married and I was just barely understanding how it all worked. But it was fine, the kingdom was fine, and we were fine. We had almost completely fixed our kingdom, everyone's voices were heard and we did the best we could to fix the things that needed it. For instance, the poorest parts of the kingdom had been sorted; the streets paved and the houses rebuilt. I would still walk around with no shoes on and Ashton had learnt long ago not to test me on that.

I squeezed his hand as he walked. It was nice, the sun beat down upon us and everything and everyone around us. The people of our kingdom greeted us kindly as we passed by on our way back to the palace. My mother and Ashton's own mother Anne's friendship had been restored as my family lived in the castle with Ashton and I.

A peaceful sigh escaped my lips as we entered the ballroom to find my siblings to be playing with our eight year old daughter. Ashton was the true father and Lucinda carried her for us through the pregnancy but was simply an aunt to our little girl.

"Aspen." I called to the girl. She looked up at us and came running across the tiled floor.

"Papa!" She exclaimed and ran to us. "How was your walk papa?" She asked as I set her down.

"It was lovely, were you good for everyone here?" I asked her.

"Yes Papa, I was very good!" She giggled and danced around us in her frilly pink dress.

Aspen looked so much like her father it frightened me sometimes. She had his hazel eyes and olive skin as well as the boisterous personality. But she was like me too, she had my fair hair and was taller than most her age. But she was also modest and cared far too much about what people thought of her.

"Shall I take you for a ride on one of the horses?" Ashton asked her.

"Yes please Pa!" She squealed. "Can we ride Sparrow?" She asked. I smiled. Sparrow had always been Aspen's favourite horse as was she mine. She was awfully old but always seemed to appreciate a ride or at least a walk around the gardens.

"Have fun sweetheart." I told her and ruffled the light curls that bounced when she ran.

"You and Ashton are such good parents." Anne commented.

"I would hope so." I said as we watched them race from the room.

"Do not fret Lucifer, you are doing a wonderful job razing both Aspen and this kingdom." She said. "You are brining it back to what it once was before being ruined and abused by Ashton's father."

"Thank you?" I replied but it came out sounding an awful lot like a question. Anne smiled before walking from the room. I sighed and weaved through the halls before reaching the gardens.

Ashton and Aspen were chasing each other amongst the Rose bushes. Their shrieking laugher echoed and bounced off the stone wall of the castle as they ran. I walked towards where Sparrow stood beneath a cherry tree grazing upon the lush green grasses that grew there.

"Hello there old girl." I said softly and stroked her neck. She let out a neigh and nudged me playfully with her nose. Her large brown eyes looked almost amused as I stumbled. "Oh hush." I chuckled.

"Talking to the horse again are we Luke?" A voice laughed. I turned around and saw Faye and Griffon walking towards me.

"Hello Faye." I smiled at the two and continued to pet the mare who had gone back to grazing.

"You still have her?" Griffon asked.

"Of course, but I do fear that this may be her last summer." I sighed. I did not want to think of losing my beloved Sparrow, she had been there long before I had met Ashton and for that I was thankful.

"Ashton simply  has not changed at all." Griffon chuckled. "Just as childish and fun as ever."

"He grew up with you. Do not be so surprised." Faye said with a laugh.

"Oh hush." The other king scoffed and nudged her playfully. I shook my head and laughed lightly at the two. They had gotten married not long after Ashton and I and were still going strong. But it never came as a surprise to anyone, they were perfect for each other.

"Will you be staying for dinner?" I asked.

"What did you expect Lucifer?"Faye snorted. She had not changed since I met her.

-----

After the feast Ashton and I were laying with Aspen in her quarters as she insisted on us telling a story before she would even consider sleeping.

I laughed and looked to Ashton who appeared to be thinking before beginning his story. "A ball, they say. A party, they say..."
