We are twice armed if we fight with faith. ~Plato

Ashton's POV

I was walking around with Leona when I saw Calum with Luke and I let out a gasp. "Oh my gosh, Calum stop!" I screamed and ran towards them. He did not budge an inch. My hand on my holster. I grabbed his wrist and pulled him back, and then I felt it. The cold chills through my body.

"Ashton!" Leona screamed at the top of her lungs, when I looked down I could see why. I could see the blood on my hand as I looked at Calum's face, draining of all color. At this point, guards were approaching us.

They never questioned my motives, they just dragged him off. In the bottom of my heart I hoped he would be alright. I felt dizzy, my head was spinning so I sank down to my knees. Leona took out a handkerchief and wiped the blood off of my hand, carefully prying the knife out of my fingers.

I crawled over to Luke and leaned over him, shaking his face back and forth. Then lowering my ear to his chest, and when I could hear his heartbeat and the steady rise and fall of his breath I felt alright. I stood up and picked him up.

"What are you doing?" Leona asked.

"I can not just leave him here." I replied quietly as I walked back towards the entrance. When I reached my room, I shut the door with my foot, locking Leona out as I set him down on my bed. The moonlight shining through the window. I had a ball in little to no time. I had no idea what I was going to do with myself. After all, what was I supposed to do? Marry a girl I never loved?

I crouched by the side of the bed for a while until standing up and getting a bucket of water and an old shirt. I tore off a section and put it in the warm water as I began to dab it on Luke's forehead and clean the dried blood off of his face. I undid the front of his shirt and slid it off, caring to the wounds underneath and wrapping it in a soft white cloth. His face seemed hot, so I damped another section of the shirt with cold water and left it on his forehead before covering his body. I swallowed hard as I looked at him, tracing over the structures of his face.

I walked over and sat on the couch attached to the window. Glancing up at the moon, I felt as if my world was shattering. But honestly I was being childish about it. After all, the people down there had more troubles than I did. More realistic problems.

I heard a knock on my door and raised myself up from the seat and opened the door to see Michael smiling. "Can we talk?"

"Now?" I said quietly.

"Yes now." Michael said. "May I come in?"

"No." I shook my head. "We can go somewhere else." I knew Michael would be deeply concerned if he saw that I was nursing Luke. So I walked out and followed Michael down the hallway. Hoping Luke would not wake up and be scared while I was gone. I did lock the door to keep all of the servants out. They knew I only locked my door when I wanted to be alone, they would leave it.

Michael and I sat down in the foyer, and he flashed a smile. "So, do you care to explain to me what you have done?"

"Not particularly." I shrugged. "I do not intend on discussing it."

"Sir Calum is fine, if it will make you change your mind."

"No."

"Ashton, you can not just stab one of your guards and expect there to be no repercussions. If you have a good reason, then when I tell the public they will not be so gravely upset." Michael explained. "So I really do need to know what happened."

"He was attacking Luke." I said. "I do not feel as if anyone has the right to lay their hands on those who can not defend themselves."

"The peasant?" Michael smiled wide. "Oh this is glorious!"

"Why?"

"Why!?" Michael scoffed. "Do you know how the people will favor you after hearing you saved a peasant by eliminating your own guard!" Michael was all too giddy about the situation. "Ashton this is beautiful, this is poetry."

"Why, I fear you are out of your mind." I rolled my eyes.

"Stay here, I am going to find a servant to fetch us snacks and drinks." Michael said. "We are going to go over every detail, extend the truth and make you a person worth rooting for. That will make even peasants show up to the ball. They will feel as if they have a chance, of course I know Leona will - "

"You think I am going to marry her?" I raised an eyebrow. "Michael, I have no intentions of it."

"Oh nonsense!" Michael laughed. "Why do you know what you could do if you married her? She is an unstoppable force. You would be ever so grateful to be accompanied by her for the rest of your life. You would wage all battles, win all wars, you would expand your reach across other kingdoms. The world will bow at your feet, Prince Ashton."

"That is not my desire!" I huffed. "Michael, I do not want to be King!"

Michael sat back wide eyed. "W-Whatever do you mean?"

"I do not want to be King, I have no aspirations to be. Oh bother, it is the worst idea. I want to be one with the people, I want to live as they do. I do not want to be on my pedestal, I do not want to be adored. I want to just be another face at the market. I do not wish for others to bow. Even the term Prince is foul." I leaned back in my chair and ran a hand down my face.

"But you use your power." Michael smiled. "You used it today, you use it against those whom you can not stand opposing you. You take it, whether you accept it or not." Michael leaned back and laughed. "Now, we are going to discuss what we will tell the public until dawn if we have to."

I let out a sigh, but knew there was no point in arguing. After all, what he said went. I only worried about Luke waking in a room he had never seen before.
