Chapter 25
The next morning, Chresanto awakened at dawn. He had only gotten about three hours of sleep. He lied in bed, staring at the ceiling. He began contemplating everything that was happening within his love life. Was he really in love with Imani like he’s been telling her? Did he really despise Zendaya because she was a “bitch” or was he just upset to see her with someone else? Was he salty because he never got a commitment from Zendaya but Rayan did? Was he ever going to tell Imani about what happened the previous night? Chresanto eventually sat up and began getting dressed. He put on a pair of Vans, jogged downstairs, grabbed his keys, and drove to Imani’s home. Once he arrived, he remembered that the front door was unlocked due to Imani being drunk and him not having a key. He walked into the home, locking the door behind him. It was sunrise outside, and he was knowledgeable of that fact due to the orange sunlight peering into Imani’s room when he walked in. He walked into her bathroom and grabbed some aspirin. He prepared her glass for her before dropping the aspirin into the water. He gently woke her up, causing her eyes to pop open. She stared at him for a moment before smiling weakly at him. “How’d you get in?” she asked. “The door was unlocked,” he answered softly, aware of the fact that her hangover will hit her at any moment. “I got you some aspirin,” he handed her the glass as she sat up. “Ugh, yes. Thanks, Baby,” she smiled, taking the glass and drinking what was in it. “Imani, I have something to tell you,” he sighed. “Wait until after I take a shower, okay?” she hopped out of bed and walked into her bathroom.
After waiting for her to get out for half an hour, Chresanto began walking around her room, looking at pictures. It was one picture that stood out to him the most… it was a group picture of the whole clique. Rayan was on one side of Imani with Alix on his back, and Chres was on the other side of Imani. Zendaya was next to Chresanto along with Craig. Jacob and Justine were crouched down in front of everyone, posing like wanna-be thugs. Chresanto chuckled at the picture that was taken their sophomore year of high school. “Man, time sure does fly,” he thought. Imani eventually stepped out of the bathroom freshly dressed and caught him grinning at the picture. He glanced over at her with a smile before putting the picture down. “I remember that. Man, those we’re the good days. Look at us! We were so young,” she laughed, picking the picture up. Chresanto stared at Imani, witnessing how she lit up with happiness just by looking back on the past. He stared at her smile, wishing for it to never fade away… but, he knew that it would fade once he broke the news to her. “Oh, Man… We’re so old now,” she spoke before putting the picture back in its spot, on her dresser. “So… what did you have to tell me?” she asked.
Chresanto tucked in his lips and looked down at his shoes. “You might want to sit down for this,” he told her. She sat down at the edge of her bed as he crouched down in front of her. He took her hands into his and stared into her eyes for several moments. “Imani… You know I would never try to hurt you, right? You know I love you and would do anything in the world to prove it to you, right?” he spoke. “Yeah,” she nodded with a smile. Seeing her smile made him nervous. It made him not want to say what needed to be said. He didn’t want to hurt her… but he knew she’d be hurt even more if he waited or didn’t tell her at all. “Well, uh… last night… Zendaya and I…” he paused, seeing her smile slowly decrease. He looked down to avoid seeing her frown. “We…” his throat began to become dry and tight. “You did what?” she asked, her voice cracking just a bit. “We fucked at the party… and that’s why it took me so long to get back to you,” he finally confessed, his heart sinking into his stomach. Imani’s heart snapped in half, and she tried to keep smiling but just couldn’t anymore.
“Th-that’s funny, Chres. You wouldn’t do that, would you?” she asked, feeling the tears beginning to surface. He remained silenced while avoiding eye contact. Imani snatched her hands from his and began crying. “I am so sorry, Imani. I didn’t mean to. I-I was stuck in the moment and--.” He stopped talking once he realized she was crying. “No, Imani. Please, don’t cry. Here,” he took her hands into his, “slap me, punch me, beat me… Make me feel what you’re feeling. I deserve it.” Imani couldn’t bring herself to hurt him. She loved him too much to see him in pain. Chresanto put her hands onto his cheeks as he furrowed his eyebrows. “Please, Imani… do something,” he held her hands tightly. His heart was low, knowing that Imani was in pain. “I just… I just have one question,” she croaked. Chresanto looked up at her, seeing the tears streaming down her chocolate cheeks. “Do you love her?” she asked. “What?” his eyebrows knitted as if he were confused. “You fucking heard me, Chres! Do you still love her?” she asked. “No. No. I only love you, remember? You’re the only one,” he spoke. “If I was the only one, why did you fuck her?! If you didn’t love her, you wouldn’t have fucked her!” Imani screamed. “I’m sorry, Baby. We--.” “Don’t call me that… just leave. I need some time to think,” she spoke. “Imani, I’m sor--.” “Save it… You know? I-I did everything I fucking could! I mean, damn, Chres… we just became official a week ago. You couldn’t have just waited until another week, at least?” she began to become livid. “It’s not like I planned on fucking her as soon as we walked in the building,” he spoke. “Technically, you did. We hit the dance floor as soon as we walked in, and as soon as we hit the dance floor, your attention was somewhere else… And who was your attention on?” she asked. Chres remained silent. “That’s what I thought,” she spoke before standing. “You can escort yourself out,” she finally spoke before walking downstairs and beginning to make herself breakfast.
