Chapter 27
Jacob.
“It’ll only be a few minutes,” she said before following the doctor. “Give me ten more minutes,” she texted me every ten minutes. I grew restless and hungry as I waited impatiently. “Come on, J. I’m getting hungry,” I texted to her. “You can go get food without me. I’m not hungry, but I promise I’ll be ready within twenty minutes,” she replied. I sighed, standing and taking my keys from my pocket. I hopped into my car and picked up some Chinese food for myself. Shrimp fried rice with baby shrimp. I arrived back to the hospital, realizing that it been twenty minutes, and Justine still wasn’t ready to go. “It’s been twenty minutes, J. You can see your friend tomorrow,” I texted her. Several minutes later, she strolled into the waiting room with a smile. “Thanks for waiting for me, Curly,” she took my hand into hers and intertwined out fingers. “Yeah, whatever,” I spoke jokingly. She kissed my cheek as we walked toward my car. I unlocked the doors to my car before we got in and began driving home. “So, his name is Daniel, right?” I asked. “Yeah,” she nodded. “And you met him in rehab?” I inquired. “Yep,” she nodded again. “Why didn’t you tell me about him?” I asked, glancing at her before looking back at the road. “Oh, I don’t know,” she half-shrugged. A laugh slipped from my lips. “Come on, now. Your only friend in rehab, and you didn’t tell me about him?” I questioned. “Well, he had a little crush on me, and I didn’t want my baby getting jealous,” she kissed my cheek after teasing me. I chuckled. “He’s no competition to me. I’m the one who gets to wake up to you every morning, so I’m good,” I smirked. She laughed as I pulled into the driveway of her home. I parked and got out of the car just as she did.
We went into her room and lied on her bed. “So, what did you and Daniel do while in rehab?” I asked, looking over at her. “We played ping-pong,” she answered. “Really? I hadn’t played that in forever,” I smiled. “Yeah, it kind of wasn’t any fun because he sucked at ping-pong,” she giggled. My smile grew wider at how adorable her giggle was. “So, what else did you guys do?” I asked. “Watch movies and whatnot,” she half-shrugged. “Seems like you had fun,” I smirked. “Yeah, well, you told me to try to have fun, so I made the best of it,” she spoke. “Well, since you two are such good friends, I want to meet him,” I proposed. “No, you don’t,” she sat up while shaking her head. “Why not?” I chuckled. “He doesn’t like you,” she let a laugh slip out of her mouth. “What do you mean? He hasn’t met me,” I began laughing. “Jacob, it’s not funny… He’s… Daniel’s crazy,” she spoke with her finger going in circles near her head. “Yeah, sure,” I laughed, sitting up. “Jacob, I’m serious. He’s infatuated with me,” she spoke. “You say it like he’s obsessed,” I replied, a wide smile still plastered onto my face. “Infatuated and Obsessed is the same thing, Jacob,” her voice raised at me. “No, Justine. Go look it up...” I spoke while leaving the room and going down the stairs. She trailed behind me. “Fine. Let’s go visit him tomorrow. You’ll meet him, and you’ll see,” she challenged. “Fine. Tomorrow, it is,” I gave a smug smile before pecking her lips.
Craig.
I was laying down with Alix who was dozing off to a movie we were watching. I held her close to me and glimpsed at her occasionally as she fought her sleep. “Go to sleep, Alix. I got you,” I kissed her forehead before a slight smile slipped onto her face. Within several minutes, her breathing slowed and she officially fell asleep. Nearly ten minutes later, my phone vibrated in my pocket. I slipped it out of my pocket and looked at the caller identification. It was a vaguely familiar number, so I hesitantly answered. “Hello?” I spoke into the phone. “Craig?” the man asked. “Yeah. It’s me speaking,” I spoke, sitting up cautiously so I wouldn’t disturb Alix’s rest. “How are you, Son?” he asked. “Fine… Great… Magnificent,” I spoke, making sure he knew that I didn’t need him in my life. “Well, that’s great… Your half-sister, Alicia, told me you called,” he spoke. “Cool,” I muttered absentmindedly. “Ya know, they really want to meet you,” he spoke. “Oh, really?” My eyebrows rose at the statement. “Yeah,” he answered. “Oh, cool,” I played off my curiosity.
