Chapter 1
The moonlight shone at a small lake only a few feet away from where they stood. The scent of melted iron was strong in the air, as well as the fizz sound from broken electricity. The rain was pounding down on them, almost horizontally, the lightning and thunder booming overhead.
The storm had begun seconds after they had been met with the tall fence they knew so well. After a few attempts at breaking it, their moods had turned sour. They had been in synch, and now, neither of them was in good moods. They were all angry and grumpy, and it was reflecting in the weather.
Rebeccas orange eyes were glowing in the darkness that surrounded them. She was certain they would soon get the answer they had been looking for. With her feelings linked directly to the other three, the homesickness Drew felt had been transferred to her and she was more than ready to go home. The thought of her book, the one that was burning a hole in her pocket, always there, and the story in it, told her she didn’t have much time left. The last picture had repeated itself over and over in her head over the last few days as they travelled from Texas to Oregon. Complete blackness. That was all that was left for her when they were done.
But even the thought that she could get a different answer than the one she knew was true in just mere minutes was enough to keep her mood from becoming completely black.
“Are you ready?” she asked quietly, waiting for the quiet approval from her three companions.
Ava and Aaron had opted this one thing out; afraid they would ruin any chances at getting the story straight by joining them. They were stationed right outside the hole in the fence, sitting in Rebecca’s blue Toyota, waiting for the four of them to return.
Rebecca heard three voices murmuring their approval, and with that she started sprinting through the small forest and towards the large mansion resting in the distance.
She could see the light coming from the windows. The closer she came, the bigger they grew until she could see the stairs leading up to the veranda.
She hurried up the steps, listening after the three pair of footsteps behind her. They had all agreed for her to go in the front, as she had the best ability to sneak in anywhere.
Finally at the top, she glanced back at her friends. It had taken a lot less time then they usually needed to convince them to come, to make them believe Niall had the answers. Even if they never said it, Rebecca was sure all three of them still had respect for him. After all he made sure they could use their abilities. Even with all the lies he had told them, they still trusted him.
To think that he had just withheld information must be hard for them to grasp, but Rebecca was glad they had chosen to believe her over Niall for one time in the last few months they had known each other. She blamed the new connection they had gained.
When she saw the three of them nod, she gently placed two of her fingers on the lock under the doorknob. After Texas, she didn’t need to go through her mantra to turn on her powers. They came naturally. So in seconds, the metal of the lock had melted off, and it was easy for Rebecca to press the doorknob down and open the door.
A smile of satisfaction crossed her face at her abilities.
The familiar surroundings of the activities floor surrounded her as she stepped through the door. She recognized the tall, white doors that led to the different rooms. She saw the one leading to the library, and a smile made it’s onto her face. It had been her favorite room while she’d been here. The one she had connected with Jennifer in, where she’d found the book, where her friendship with Alex had actually begun, where she had helped Drew apologize to Jennifer. The library held the only memories she cherished from this place.
