Chapter 4

Alex was pacing the hall, right in front of the elevator. He was checking the watch on his phone almost every second. He was waiting anxiously for the clock to reach ten minutes. He did not want to leave Rebecca up there alone. After everything they had learned today, he didn’t trust any of the people in this building.

Alex couldn’t believe she had asked him to leave. He thought they were together in everything now. And then she just banished him when she obviously hadn’t gotten all the answers. But strangely that was not what was bothering him the most.

Thoughts were running through his head. Anything could happen up there. He didn’t know how close the two of them were, or how much Rebecca trusted Melanie. Although Rebecca had her element on her side, Melanie had been trained for at least a decade and a half more than Rebecca had.

Alex fished his phone out of his pocket again. He watched as the clock ticked again, hitting the ten minute mark. The he pushed it back in his pocket and pushed the UP button on the elevator. The doors opened and Alex stepped inside.

He tapped his foot impatiently as the elevator moved upwards. He couldn’t keep still in anticipation for what he would find. Every second felt like an eternity.

And then the elevator finally stopped. The doors opened and Alex stepped out.

“Rebecca, it’s time to leave. Now,” Alex demanded.

Rebecca was sitting on the mat on the floor alone. She had her legs crossed in front of her, her arms wrapped around them. Her head was resting on her knees with her eyes closed.

“Where’s Melanie?” he asked.

Rebecca opened her eyes. When she saw him, she smiled a little and began to stand up.

“She left after I asked her the questions I needed,” she answered.

Alex walked over to her.

“We’re leaving,” he said.

Rebecca shrugged and started walking back to the elevator.

“Yeah, you’re right. I’ve gotten the answers I need,” Rebecca answered easily.

Then she walked through the open elevator doors.

Walking through the forest at the back of the property, Drew held tightly around Jennifer. Jennifer walked with an empty expression on her face. She had said all she needed to, all she had on her heart.

Unfortunately, Jennifer had the feeling that they didn’t get the information they needed. They had basically gotten Niall’s life story. But what they needed was the location of the Great Evil. Niall hadn’t really given them anything.

“I’m sorry if me flipping out ruined our chances at finding the next location,” Jennifer suddenly said.

“Niall didn’t know anything either way,” Drew answered immediately. “It wasn’t your fault. And if I know Rebecca, she won’t leave before she has all she wants.”

Jennifer sighed just as the fence came into view.

This mansion had been her safe place for the months they had been staying there. Now, she couldn’t wait to get out of there. A smile slipped onto her face as she raised her foot to get through the hole in the fence. This was the last time she would ever step foot into this place. And this time, she was actually happy about it.

Drew followed right after her. He didn’t look back. He wouldn’t miss this place. He didn’t want to come back, and now he wouldn’t. Never again would he have to step inside that place. It was just too bad they didn’t get what they wanted.
